MOBILE, Ala. – The ULM women's basketball team (9-14, 5-7 Sun Belt) dropped another conference contest on the road, falling to the South Alabama Jaguars (5-18, 1-11 Sun Belt). The Jaguars picked up their first Sun Belt win this season in the Mitchell Center.
Four Warhawks scored in double digits in the loss to South Alabama.
Sakyia White picked up her third double-double of the season, leading the team with a career-high 19 points and 13 rebounds.
Jakayla Johnson was close to White with 18 points, three rebounds and two steals.
Meloney Thames reached 14 points, hitting two triples and posting a block and a steal. To round out the Warhawks in double figures,
Katlyn Manuel scored 10 points and picked up seven boards, as well as two blocks and two steals.
South Alabama opened the quarter draining a triple, going on a 5-0 run while ULM tried to get a shot to drop. ULM shot 5-22 in the first quarter, trying to get in the swing of things. After a scoring run by the Jaguars, the Warhawks got behind nine points at the conclusion of the first quarter. Another triple by South Alabama opened the second quarter, extending the lead to double digits. Back-to-back scores by Manuel got the Warhawks back on track, with a Johsnon three-pointer closing the gap to five points. After another triple by Thames and a layup by
Cianté Downs, the Warhawks were able to close out the Jaguars in the final minutes to make it a two-point game at the half, 34-32.
The second half was led by White, who picked up a defensive rebound to score and open the second half. Another layup by the senior tied the game for the Warhawks and free throws by White gave ULM their first lead of the day. The Jaguars came to life midway through the quarter, going on a 7-0 run and shooting 3-3 from the field to regain the lead. Another triple by Thames kept it close for ULM, ending the third quarter down by five. Johnson opened the scoring in the fourth quarter and Manuel reached double digits, working to rally back. South Alabama closed out the quarter shooting 5-7 from the field and going on a 7-0 run to extend the lead, ending the contest 68-73.
The Warhawks will remain on the road to take on the Troy Trojans in Troy, Ala. ULM will tip off against the Trojans at 6 p.m. on Wednesday (Feb. 12).
