Warhawks Drop Second Game against Cougars, 11-15

Maryssa Zenzen hit two home runs in the high-scoring contest, as Houston rallied in the sixth inning.

HOUSTON, Texas – The ULM softball team (1-4) fell in a comeback loss to Houston (5-0) on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 9). The Warhawks were up for the first six innings of the contest, but two six-run innings for the Cougars gave them the win.

ULM got off to a hot start, with a Maddie Nichols double picking up two RBIs and a three-run homer by Maryssa Zenzen opening the first inning with a 5-0 lead. The Warhawks were able to keep up the energy in the top of the third, freshman Hollie Thomas picking up an RBI and Carys Platt scoring on an error. Thomas went on to cross home plate when Jacelyn Buck hit a single to make the score 8-0 in favor of ULM.

The Cougars would not give up, however, putting up a six-run inning in the third to close the gap to two runs. Another run scored in the fourth kept the momentum in Houston's favor, cutting the lead to one. A Meagan Brown single in the fifth picked up another RBI to maintain the Warhawk lead. Hartley for the Cougars scored a run and hit a double to tally another RBI, tying the game up as the fifth inning closed.

A second home run from Zenzen and a sacrifice fly to score Morgan Brown gave ULM a two-run advantage in the sixth. But another six-run inning for Houston, including two singles and a double, gave the Cougars their first lead of the day. A 1-2-3 inning for ULM at the top of the seventh solidified the fifth-straight win for Houston, 15-11.

Lippert and Morgan Brown led the team with three hits apiece, with four other Warhawks picking up two hits in the contest. Zenzen hit two home runs on two hits, drilling home four RBIs. Mimi Blackledge is credited with the loss, allowing three hits and six runs in one inning of play.

The Warhawks will travel closer to home next weekend, taking on Louisiana Tech and Arkansas in the Louisiana Tech Classic in Ruston, La. ULM will face the Razorbacks at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 15) and Sunday (Feb. 16) and the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on both days as well.
