GRAMBLING, La. – The ULM softball team (19-10) shut out the Grambling State Tigers (5-14) on Tuesday afternoon (March 11) at Grambling. The team claimed a no-hitter in the shutout win, logging the first triple play since 2015 to hold the Tigers off.
ULM picked up an early two hits in the first inning but left both on base in the first.
Victoria Abrams struck out two Tigers to leave both teams without a score after an inning. A lead-off single for
Elle Carter and a subsequent stolen base gave her the chance to score the opening run off an error from a
Kelsey Kovar single.
After holding off the Tigers in the second, the Warhawks tacked on another run through an RBI single from
Hollie Thomas. Three runs came in for ULM in the fourth, with Kovar hitting the lead-off single for
Brooklin Lippert to score the catcher, making it a 3-0 game. Three stolen bases gave Lippert the opportunity to cross home,
Meagan Brown following closely behind off an error.
Maddie Nichols opened the fifth inning as a pinch hitter, tallying one of two extra-base hits for the Warhawks with a double. Kovar hit a sacrifice fly to pick up an RBI for the six-run lead. ULM continued to hold off Grambling State defensively as well, a triple play closing out the Tigers in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth to send the game to the final inning.
Maryssa Zenzen added the seventh and final run for ULM, hitting a solo home run to left field, her seventh homer of the season, to make it a final score of 7-0.
ULM continues their home run streak, having hit at least one homer in the last four games. Zenzen and Kovar had multi-hit games, leading the team with two hits.
Meagan Brown scored two runs in the contest to lead the team. Abrams was credited with the win, pitching four innings and allowing no hits, no runs and striking out six batters.
Dakota Lake came in to pick up the save, pitching three innings and striking out five batters to maintain the no-hitter and the shutout.
ULM Softball will be back in action at the ULM Softball Complex this weekend for the Sun Belt opener. The Warhawks will take on the Georgia State Panthers for their first Sun Belt series, starting on Friday (March 14) at 5 p.m.
