Warhawks Claim Series with 4-0 Shutout Victory Over UT Arlington

Behind Daniel Gonzalez's second quality start of the season and a three-inning save from Brandon Brewer, the Warhawks recorded their first shutout in nearly two years to take the series from the Mavericks.

MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team (7-8) recorded its first shutout since March 12, 2023 and secured a series win with a 4-0 victory over UT Arlington (4-8) on Sunday (March 9) at Lou St. Amant Field in Monroe, La.

Daniel Gonzalez pitched his second consecutive quality start and threw six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out four batters. Brandon Brewer shut the door with his second save of the season, tossing three scoreless innings and punching out one. It marked the first shutout for ULM versus UT Arlington since May 3, 2019 in a Sun Belt Conference series.

Henry Garcia Jr. drove in three RBI on the day in a 2-for-4 performance at the plate while Jake Haggard crushed his second home run of the season for ULM's offensive production. Colby Lunsford racked up a multi-hit game and scored a run for ULM while Michelle Artzberger and Isaiah Walker both finished with a hit and a run scored.

Gonzalez hurled a scoreless first inning despite a two-out hit by Tyce Armstrong with Garcia Jr. making a running grab for the third out of the inning. Artzberger collected his third hit of the series on a sharp grounder up the middle to kickstart the ULM offense in the first. Lunsford followed with another hard-hit ball up the middle for two consecutive hits. After a sacrifice bunt by Walker and a strikeout, ULM faced two outs with runners in scoring position. On a 2-2 pitch, Garcia Jr. lined a fastball up the middle for a two-RBI base hit that scored Artzberger and Lunsford to give ULM an early 2-0 lead. The Mavs placed a runner at third base with one out from a double and wild pitch. Gonzalez escaped the jam without allowing a run by pitching a groundout and a flyout. The Warhawks went down in order in the bottom of the second. Gonzalez again avoided damage in the top of the third despite the first two Mavs reaching and tossed a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to complete three shutout innings. Lunsford singled in consecutive at-bats and swiped second base with no outs. Mavs pitcher Joe Steeber recorded three straight outs to keep ULM's lead at two through three innings.

Gonzalez worked around traffic in the fourth following a leadoff double and a walk and tossed his fourth scoreless inning after forcing the Mavs into two flyouts and a strikeout. Angelo Aleman singled with one out in the fourth for ULM but was picked off for the Warhawks' lone base runner of the inning. Gonzalez fired a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, which concluded with his fourth strikeout of the afternoon. Following a scoreless inning for ULM offensively, Gonzalez sat the Mavs down in order for his second quality start of the season. Walker started the bottom of the sixth with a base hit down the right field line and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Garcia Jr. picked up his third RBI of the day with a base hit to right that scored Walker. With two outs, Haggard deposited his second home run of the year beyond the right-center field wall on a 405-foot blast to increase the Warhawks' lead to four after six innings.

ULM turned to its bullpen in the top of the seventh inning, as Brewer worked around a pair of base runners for a scoreless frame. After a scoreless bottom of the seventh, three straight batters reached base for the Mavs and loaded the bases with one out. Brewer again maneuvered around the base runners and recorded a huge strikeout for the second out and induced a foul popout to keep the Mavs off the scoreboard. Brewer shut the door in the top of the ninth and completed the shutout for the Warhawks and picked up his second save of the season.

The ULM baseball team is back at The Lou on Tuesday (March 11) night for a midweek game versus Alcorn State at 6 p.m.
