FLORENCE, Ala. – The ULM softball team (18-10) swept the Detroit Mercy Titans (3-13) in the North Alabama Tournament on Sunday morning (March 9), 9-1, in six innings. The Warhawks close out tournament play with a one-hitter, going 3-2 on the weekend.
Both teams opened play with an empty two innings. The Warhawks posted three hits over the first three innings, but were unable to convert them into runs. The Titans struck first, a walk and a single leading the way for the sacrifice bunt that scored the lone run for Detroit Mercy.
The fourth inning brought ULM the lead, as a single and a throwing error set up
Jacelyn Buck to score two on an RBI double to left field. Buck then stole home to extend the lead for the Warhawks. A
Meagan Brown double completed the four-run inning, making it a 4-1 score after four innings.
Three more runs were tacked on in the fifth, as another RBI double from Buck scored the fifth run and
Carys Platt grounded out to score another. Lippert singled to make it a seven-run game in the fifth. Pitcher
Victoria Abrams continued to hold the Titans without any additional scores in the latter innings. A
Maryssa Zenzen two-run homer, her sixth home run this season, solidified the victory for ULM, making it a 9-1 score. Three outs for Detroit Mercy in the bottom of the sixth ended the game through a run-rule, ULM winning their third in a row.
Lippert and Zenzen led the team with three hits apiece, Buck leading with three RBIs on the day with her two doubles. The Warhawks have now hit a home run in the last three games. Abrams picked up a complete game and the win, improving to a 5-2 record. The senior pitched all six innings, allowing one hit, one runs and two walks, striking out four batters in the win.
ULM will be back in action on Tuesday (March 11), traveling to take on local foe Grambling State. The Warhawks will face the Tigers at 3 p.m. in Grambling, looking to extend a win streak that dates back to 2006.
