Boone, N.C. – The ULM softball team (28-16, 8-5 Sun Belt) dropped the series opener against App State (17-21, 7-6 Sun Belt) on Friday (April 11) in Boone. A grand slam and a solo home run racked up the score for the home team as the Mountaineers got off to an early lead.
App State struck first in the opening inning, as an RBI single and a grand slam gave the Mountaineers an early 5-0 lead. A solo home run added on a sixth score in the second inning with a wide margin for the home team.
After a scoreless third and fourth innings for both teams, the Warhawks made a rally attempt in the fifth. After
Carys Platt and
Brooklin Lippert both hit singles,
Meagan Brown reached on a fielder's choice, a throwing error scoring two runs.
Morgan Brown then grounded out, picking up the RBI for a 3-6 score.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more runs in the fifth, an RBI single and triple extending the lead to five yet again. After Platt tripled down the line in the sixth, Lippert gave the Warhawks another run from a sacrifice bunt for a 4-8 score. A three-up, three-down seventh inning solidified the opening win for App State.

Elle Carter and
Brooklin Lippert each stole a base in the contest, with
Maryssa Zenzen leading in defensive efforts with seven putouts.
Maddie Nichols was credited with the loss, pitching 1.2 innings and allowing two walks and striking out a batter.
Mimi Blackledge and
Bristin Bordeau also saw action in the circle, Blackledge pitching a season-high 3.1 innings.
The Warhawks will be facing the Mountaineers for the second game of the series on Saturday (April 12) at 1 p.m. CT.
