TROY, Ala. – Seven first-inning runs and a complete game by Troy pitcher Noah Edders culminated in an 11-1 run-rule defeat for the ULM baseball team on Friday night.
Â
Isaiah Walker started the top of the first inning with a double on the second pitch but was picked off in the next at-bat. The Warhawks (19-21, 5-12) came up empty in the frame after a Henry Gracia Jr. pop-out. The Trojans (28-11, 12-5) put two runners on with two
Daniel Gonzalez walks. A double into left-center field scored both runners and gave Troy an early 2-0 lead.
Â
Gonzalez loaded the bases without recording an out, making head coach
Michael Federico look to the bullpen and bring in
Zach Shaw. After two more runs scored on a base hit, a Gavin Schrader three-run homer to right field made it a 7-0 ballgame at the end of the first.
Â
After a scoreless second frame, the Warhawks were able to put runners at first and second with no one out, but a strikeout and a double play ended the opportunity. The Trojans added on to their lead with two more runs to go up 9-0.
Â
Shaw finished the night with a full 4.2 innings of work and 80 pitches thrown.
Seaver Sheets entered the game in the bottom of the fifth after a two-RBI double put Troy up by double digits.
Â
The Warhawks finally broke the shutout with their backs against the wall in the top of the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly by
Jake Haggard. ULM couldn't add on, and the game ended prematurely with the run rule.
Â
The Warhawks look to leave Troy with a win with game three of the series starting at 3:33 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
