Warhawks Drop First Game in Texas State Series

After taking the lead through six innings, a five-spot put the Bobcats ahead in the seventh.

MONROE, La. – The ULM softball team (34-19, 14-8 Sun Belt) fell in the first game of the series to Texas State (32-18, 14-8 Sun Belt) on Thursday (May 1) in front of the largest crowd for a Sun Belt opponent with 1,207 fans at the ULM Softball Complex. After ULM found the early lead, a rally in the seventh proved fruitful for the Bobcats as they claimed the win.

After holding the Bobcats scoreless in the first, Brooklin Lippert hit a lead-off single to extend her hitting streak to 16, the longest active streak in the Sun Belt. Meagan Brown followed things up with a double, Morgan Brown snagging the RBI as a single drove in Lippert. A sacrifice fly by Maryssa Zenzen gave ULM the early 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Both teams held strong defensively as the 2-0 score remained through the fourth inning, Victoria Abrams striking out four batters in the process. After Jacelyn Buck opened things up in the bottom of the fifth with a single, a ground-out picked up the RBI for Lippert, scoring the third run for the Warhawks after five innings.

Another scoreless inning in the sixth brought the final inning of the contest, as ULM had held the Bobcats without a hit through six innings. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Texas State, however, a walk getting them on the board. An RBI single followed for the 2-3 score, Aiyana Coleman finishing things off with a three-RBI double to secure the lead and eventual win with a 5-3 score.

Layla Thompson led the team with two hits on the night, both Meagan Brown and Elle Carter snagging a double for the lone extra-base hits. Brooklin Lippert, Morgan Brown and Maryssa Zenzen each tack on an RBI as well. Victoria Abrams pitched six innings, allowing two hits and striking out five batters. Dakota Lake is credited with the loss, allowing two hits in one inning in the circle.

The Warhawks will be back in action on Friday (May 2) at 6 p.m. for the second game in the series against the Bobcats.
