SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The ULM baseball team (21-26, 7-16 Sun Belt) fell in game two on the road to Texas State (23-24, 11-12) after the Bobcats claimed the series with a 7-3 win on Saturday (May 3) at Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.
The Bobcats slugged 16 hits and three doubles in Saturday's win while ULM was held to five hits. ULM struck out four Bobcats while Texas State recorded seven strikeouts.
Michelle Artzberger recorded the first hit of the game with two outs in the top of the first inning. ULM catcher
Tony Lindwedel cut down the final out of the bottom of the first after catching a Texas State base runner attempting to steal second base resulting in a scoreless inning for ULM starting pitcher
Brennan Eager. After both teams were held scoreless in the second and third innings,
Bryce Blaser led off the top of the fourth inning with a base hit before a double play and a fly out ended the top half of the inning. Eager struck out two Bobcats in the bottom of the fourth inning with a runner on first base. Texas State center fielder Samson Pugh drove in Austin Munguia for the game's first run with a two-out RBI hit, and the Bobcats led 1-0 after four innings.
After a 1-2-3 inning for the Warhawks at the plate, Texas State increased its lead to three in the bottom of the fifth following an RBI base hit by Chase Mora and an RBI double off the bat of Munguia.
Major Brignon singled with one out in the top of the sixth and
Isaiah Walker followed with a four-pitch walk. After Artzberger walked to load the bases,
Henry Garcia Jr. earned ULM's third walk of the inning that scored Brignon and the Warhawks trimmed Texas State's lead to two runs. The Bobcats answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI single by Mora and an infield RBI hit by Dawson Park.
Barham White scored on a double play in the seventh inning to bring the Warhawks within four runs. Texas State added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a Park RBI triple to go ahead, 7-2. ULM loaded the bases in the top of the ninth after
Angelo Aleman walked and White and
Kade Dupont singled.
Jacob Billings drove in a run on a pinch-hit RBI walk to cut the Texas State lead to four runs once again. The Bobcats recorded the final three outs and clinched the series with a 7-3 win in game two.
The series finale between the Warhawks and Bobcats is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. from Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos.
