Soccer Preview: at UAB

After a last-minute goal to claim victory in Thibodaux, the Warhawks look to bring momentum into their first-ever meeting against the Blazers.

MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team (2-1) will continue their three-match road trip, concluding this weekend. In the final match of the road streak, the Warhawks head to UAB (0-2-1) on Sunday (Aug. 24) at 7 p.m. CT. ULM looks to create a win streak in Birmingham after a win over Nicholls. UAB is on the hunt for its first win of the season.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS –
UAB went 7-5-5 in 2024, falling in the first round in the American Conference Tournament and finishing fifth in the conference. The Blazers return 16 players, including the top three goal scorers from last season: Abbey Burns, Jette Zimmer and Sydney Bollinger. Burns, Zimmers and Louise Larsson were all recognized on the American Conference Preseason Watchlist as well. UAB opened the season with a 1-2 loss to UCF at home, then claiming a tie at ETSU. The Blazers traveled to face Ole Miss before hosting the Warhawks, falling 1-2 in Oxford.

SPREADING THE WEALTH –
Six different Warhawks have scored goals this season and nine have earned points. In the Aug. 14 season opener vs. Southeastern Louisiana, four different ULM players scored a goal. Beth Strutton leads the pack with five points, scoring two goals and recording an assist so far.

FIRST-TIME MEETING –
This is the first-ever meeting between the Blazers and the Warhawks in soccer. UAB and ULM tried to schedule two meetings during the 2020-21 season, but both were canceled. ULM will also face Houston for the first time in program history this season.

LAST TIME OUT –
THIBODAUX, La. – The ULM women's soccer team found a way in an 87th-minute game winner against the Nicholls State Colonels on Thursday (Aug. 21) night. As ULM scored goals in the first half for a 2-0 lead, Nicholls caught up before a game winner secured the victory for the Warhawks.

In the sixth minute, sophomore Beth Strutton knocked the ball into the net for the first score of the evening. It was Strutton's second goal of the season, assisted by Margret Edda Bjarnadottir, her second of the season.

In the 16th minute, Skylar Blaise followed things up with her second goal of 2025, Libby Holmes claiming the assist, for an early 2-0 lead for the road team. But the Colonels would not let up. A penalty kick in the 25th minute gave Nicholls momentum to keep things tight. At the half, the score was 2-1, with ULM ahead.

For the majority of the second half, ULM registered shot after shot, but Nicholls goalkeeper Aislinn Wright made six saves to prevent the lead. The Colonels then found a way to tie things up in the 80th minute. With time running out, the Warhawks pushed for a response and a game winner. In the 87th minute, newcomer Maria Thania Gealon made it happen, knocking the ball into the bottom left for the third goal of the night and the ULM win.

Leane Commaret and Giulia Franco each led the team with four shots apiece. Holmes and Bjarnadottir will earn a point for their assists, while Strutton, Blaise and Gealon will add two to their tally. Jen Handy and Kaisa Vale each played 45 minutes in goal, allowing a goal each.
