Warhawks Come From Behind to Complete Sweep of Doubleheader

ULM stays undefeated at home to start 2025.

MONROE, La. – Aniya Hall racked up a career-high 29 kills in match two of Tuesday's doubleheader as ULM volleyball collected 3-0 and 3-2 wins over Alcorn State and Lamar, respectively.

The Warhawks (8-4) came from behind down 2-0 for the second time this season en route to their eighth win in 2025.

"We just reverse-swept a quality volleyball program," head coach Reid Gann said. "Lamar is a good team that's going to win many games this year."

Both teams started the first set evenly matched, with the Warhawks holding a narrow 6-4 lead. A 4-1 run propelled the Braves (0-8) into the lead at 8-7 before another 4-1 run by ULM gave it back the advantage. With the help of two aces by Morgan Howard, the Warhawks constructed a 5-1 run to take a 16-11 lead.

Alcorn State slowly fought back and brought the deficit to four late, but another ace by Howard and three combined kills from Aniya Hall, Chavon Weaver, and Kenzie Behl finished the set, giving ULM a 1-0 match lead.

Set two was all Warhawks. With five kills from Kennedy Plummer along with two blocks from Behl, ULM built a towering 18-1 run behind the serve of Eden Peitrzak. The Braves added nine points through the rest of the set, but it was too little too late as the Warhawks possessed a 2-0 lead.

"Volleyball is a game of runs," Gann said. "That was a really good run by Eden on the serve."

In the third, leading 5-4, ULM added seven unanswered points with two kills each from Madison Derden and Defne Aydin. Powered by three kills from Hall, the Warhawks' lead increased to ten with an 18-8 mark. Leading 23-10 late, Beril Celik ended things with a block and a final kill, giving ULM a win in match one.

Plummer and Hall both lead with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, with Howard totaling four aces on the match and 21 assists. Raney compiled double-digit digs with 14.

In match two vs. Lamar (4-8), set one started with a Cardinal advantage at 9-6. Three Warhawk kills powered a 4-0 run to take control, before an 8-2 run by the visitors flipped the script. ULM brought the score to within three at 20-17, but were shut out the rest of the way, dropping the set.

With three attack errors by Lamar and two kills each by Hall and Derden, the home squad started the second hot with a 7-2 advantage. The Cardinals worked the score to a 9-6 result before executing an 8-3 run and grabbing a two-point lead. Trailing 17-15, ULM scored four of the next five to take control late before a 4-1 run by the Cardinals gave them the lead.

The Warhawks fought back to set point, leading 24-23, but couldn't close it out. Lamar, holding a set-point of its own, benefited from a ULM attack error to win set two and put the Warhawks in a deep 2-0-sized hole.

The Beaumont-based squad seemed well on its way to a three-set victory after a 15-5 start in set three. ULM wasn't done yet and replied with an 8-1 scoring run to draw within four. Another 7-2 surge from the home team, and the set was all of a sudden tied at 20-20. Lamar could only muster a single kill in response to the Warhawk onslaught as the match was extended to another set.

ULM continued its fire early into the fourth with a 9-5 cushion. Backed by three kills from Hall, it controlled the pace, leading 18-10. The Cardinals tried to come back and made it a four-point set, but a final 6-1 run with four kills from Plummer forced a winner-take-all fifth set.

Hall got two kills early as ULM started 4-0 in the final frame before a 4-0 Lamar counter punch set things to a stalemate. The home team gained control again, this time with a 4-1 run. The Cardinals responded in kind, and both teams found themselves in a 10-10 set.

Hall took things over from there and powered four total kills in the final push, completing the comeback and giving ULM a morale-boosting victory heading into the final non-conference weekend.

"We kept our heads down and kept fighting," Gann said. "I'm really proud of this win and it's a big one for us."

Along with Hall, Derden and Plummer also earned double-digit kills with 15 each. Howard collected a season-high 41 assists with two more aces, and both Briana Raney and Derden reached double-digit digs on the match.

The Warhawks play their final two non-conference matches in Huntsville, Texas, at the Bearkat Classic against Houston Christian and Sam Houston.
