Soccer Preview: Marshall

ULM Soccer looks to continue home success by facing Marshall at Brown Stadium.

MONROE, La. – The Warhawks (5-2-1, 0-0-1 SBC) will host Marshall (4-2-1, 0-0-1 SBC) on Thursday (Sept. 18) at 7 p.m. CT at Brown Stadium. Both teams look to find momentum after opening conference play with 1-1 ties.

SCOUTING THE HERD –

Marshall is currently 4-2-1 on the season, opening Sun Belt play with a 1-1 tie at Georgia Southern. The Thundering Herd claimed wins over Morehead State, Glenville State, Ohio and Wright State to get off to an early win streak. Freshman Geovanna Souza claimed Offensive Player of the Week honors on August 26 after posting two goals and two assists in two matches. Midfielder Marcella Alves leads the team with eight points (3g, 2a), while Fernanda Dantas co-leads the Sun Belt with five assists on the season. The Herd is selected to finish 10th in the conference, while they did receive a first-place vote.

SPREADING THE WEALTH –

Eight different Warhawks have scored each of the 15 goals this season and 14 have earned points. In the Aug. 14 season opener vs. Southeastern Louisiana, four different ULM players scored a goal. In the Aug. 27 match against Little Rock, four Warhawks claimed points from assists. Skylar Blaise leads the pack with eight points so far, posting four goals.

SET PIECES –

The Warhawks have been known to capitalize off set pieces this season, with eight of the team's 15 goals coming off set pieces. ULM also ranks first in the Sun Belt and 24th nationally in corner kicks, averaging 6.9 per game as they look for more scoring opportunities.

O CAPTAINS OUR CAPTAINS –

ULM Soccer has named three captains this season: forward Skylar Blaise, defender Beth Strutton and defender Libby Holmes. Blaise, Strutton and Holmes are the top three leaders in points this season, with the captains collecting eight, six and six points, respectively.

SERIES VS. MARSHALL –

This is the third meeting between the Thundering Herd and the Warhawks, meeting at Brown Stadium for the first time since 2022. The first meeting between the two teams was in 2022, a 0-0 draw at Brown Stadium. Most recently, ULM claimed a 3-1 win at Marshall in 2023 to secure the 1-0-1 series lead.

HOME SWEET HOME –

The Warhawks are currently undefeated at Brown Stadium, defeating Southeastern Louisiana, Little Rock, Southern and North Texas. They have also collected a draw against Texas State. ULM has posted three clean sheets at home this season, allowing two goals in five matches.

LAST TIME OUT –

MONROE, La. – The ULM soccer team claimed a draw against Texas State at Brown Stadium to open Sun Belt play. Leane Commaret tallied her first career goal, while Jen Handy led the defense in preventing a game winner.

The Warhawks were able to get on the offense early in the contest. They notched two shots in the first 15 minutes, with the lone ULM goal coming in the 17th minute. Assisted by Margret Edda Bjarnadottir from a corner kick, Commaret posted her first career goal, heading the ball into the bottom left of the net for the 1-0 score. The Warhawks maintained control of the ball, logging multiple shots as they looked to put the match away. As they continued to push for a tying goal, goalkeeper Handy posted save after save and the defense knocked the ball away countless times for a 1-0 score at the half.

Texas State came in hot in the second half, regaining control of the ball and surpassing the War-hawks in shots, nine to four. Five minutes into the second half, Victoria Meza knocked a corner kick into the net for the equalizer, making it a 1-1 tally. Both teams kept fighting, but Texas State ultimately held control of the ball in the final 40 minutes of the half. Three clutch saves for Handy in the second half prevented a game-winning goal, as both teams captured a point in the first match of conference play.
