MONROE, La. – It was a tough run for the Warhawks (3-17, 0-8 Sun Belt), as host Marshall (13-7, 5-3 Sun Belt) expanded to a 5-3 conference record in the 115-60 score in Huntington this afternoon. The Thundering Herd hit 26 triples across the game to create an early advantage and did not let up. Six Marshall players reached double digits in the win.
Renars Sondors led the team with 16 points, shooting seven-of-eight from the free throw line and collecting five boards.
Krystian Lewis also reached double figures with 15 points and three steals. To round out the leaders,
MJ Russell scored 10 points.
Noah Otshudi opened the scoring for Marshall with a layup, but a three-pointer from
Dylan Diaz got the Warhawks on track. After the opening minute, it was all about the shots from beyond the arc, as the home team dropped 15 triples in the first half alone. The threes set up the Thundering Herd to go on multiple scoring runs, pulling ahead by as much as 30 in the opening half.
As Lewis reached double-figures to try and keep the Warhawks in it, 23 first-half rebounds also allowed for Marshall to capitalize. Five triples for ULM set up an early disparity beyond the arc, with Lewis hitting two in the first half.
Ayomide Bamisile got in on the action with a dunk as time ran down as well. In the final minutes, Marshall shot 10-of-12 from the field and went on a 15-3 run for the 65-36 score at halftime.
Sondors opened the scoring with a jumper to work on chipping away. Free throws from Lewis allowed for four unanswered points to open things up. But an 18-1 scoring run for the following several minutes from the Thundering Herd had the home team extending its lead. Another run in the middle of the half extended further, as ULM struggled to find a shot from the field. Free throws continued to give points to the Warhawks, hitting double-digit free throws (21) for their 18
th of 20 games.
ULM will remain east, facing the App State Mountaineers in Boone on Friday (Jan. 23). Tipoff against the Mountaineers is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT / Noon ET.
