MONROE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (8-11, 3-7 Sun Belt) once again fell just short of a signature conference win as they lost 82-75 to Marshall (17-5, 8-2 Sun Belt) on Friday. The Thundering Herd were lights out from three-point range as they connected on 15 of their 31 attempts and shot 53 percent overall from the field for the game.Â
Â
Marcavia Shavers recorded her fifth double-double of the season as she scored a career high 18 point and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Warhawks in both categories.
Asia Barclay came within one rebound of her first double-double of the season as she finished with 17 points and nine boards.
Jazmine Jackson added 12 points while making three of her eight attempts from beyond the arc.
Â
Similar to last night's start, back-to-back three-pointers from
Nakiyah Mays-Prince and
Asjah Inniss initiated an 11-2 run to start the first quarter for ULM. A three-point play by Barclay and a three-pointer by Jackson would eventually push the lead to 11 for the home side. From that point, Marshall's offense awoke, and the visitors closed the quarter on a 16-5 run behind four three-pointers to tie the game at 22 after one quarter. Â
Â
A three-point play by Shavers opened the second quarter for the Warhawks but the Thundering Herd answered back with a three. The lead would change hands multiple times between the two sides before they found themselves deadlocked again at 31. A three-point play off an offensive rebound by
Keshunti Nichols and another three-pointer from Jackson put ULM back up by six but Marshall would go on a 12-2 run at the end of the quarter prior to a basket at the buzzer by Barclay that made it a two-point halftime deficit for the Warhawks.
Â
Marshall would take ULM to task on both ends of the floor in the third quarter as they held their hosts to only three baskets while knocking down five three-pointers themselves. The Thundering Herd closed the quarter on a 15-2 run to go into the fourth with their largest lead of the game of 17.
Â
The visitors would hold off an initial push by the Warhawks to start the quarter as they increased their lead to 21 with about seven minutes left in the game. Another three-point play by Barclay would be the catalyst for a 16-3 run by ULM to cut the deficit to single digits. Marshall's 15th three-pointer of the evening proved to be decisive and similar long-range efforts from Inniss and Mays-Prince down the stretch would not be enough to complete the comeback.
Â
The Warhawks will head back out on the road next week as they plan to face Old Dominion on Wednesday. Tipoff at Chartway Arena is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT.
