Warhawks Prevail in Fourth Quarter vs. Cajuns

ULM record their first road win of the season in Lafayette.

LAFAYETTE, La. – The ULM women's basketball team (7-7, 2-3 Sun Belt) found a way Thursday night to defeat their rivals the Ragin' Cajuns (1-14, 0-5 Sun Belt) 61-51 for their first road win of the season. The Warhawks were down as many as 16 at one point but outscored the Cajuns 27-9 in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback victory.

J'Mani Ingram and Asjah Inniss led ULM offensively as each scored a team high 15 points. Marcavia Shavers recorded her third straight double-double by scoring 12 points and grabbing a team high 16 rebounds. Keshunti Nichols chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.

The Warhawks got off to a slow start in the first quarter as the Cajuns went on an 11-2 run to push their lead to 10 early. Shavers kept ULM afloat as she managed to score eight of her points in the first stanza while being the only Warhawk to record a basket.

ULM would see their deficit grow to 16 at the midway point of the second quarter as the hosts tacked on an additional 9-0 run at the beginning. A Jazmine Jackson three-pointer out of a timeout not only ended the run but ignited an 8-0 run by the visitors to cut the lead down to single digits. Neither team would score over the final 2:17 of the quarter as both offenses combined for only six made shots in the second quarter.

The Cajuns would keep the Warhawks at arm's length throughout the third quarter as both sides traded baskets. Ingram and Inniss would score 12 of the team's 15 points for the quarter but the Cajuns maintained their halftime lead going into the fourth quarter.

It all came together for ULM as Inniss' second three-pointer of the game began the comeback early in the fourth quarter. After a handful of made free throws, a pair of baskets off turnovers sandwiched around another three by Inniss allowed the Warhawks to take their first lead of the game with under five minutes left to play.

The three-pointer was the beginning of a 16-2 run to close out the game by the Warhawks who held the Cajuns to one made basket in six attempts while forcing two turnovers over the final five minutes of play. ULM held the Cajuns to 32 percent shooting for the game while dominating the boards 50-38 on their way to an 18-0 advantage in second chance points.

The Warhawks will look to build off their newfound momentum on Saturday against South Alabama. Tipoff at the Mitchell Center is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT.
