SAN MARCOS, Texas – The ULM Warhawks (4-23, 1-13 Sun Belt) fell on the road in a 95-84 contest to the Texas State Bobcats (17-11, 9-6 Sun Belt) on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14). Despite shooting 55% from the field and a whopping 56% from beyond the arc, ULM fell to the 64%-shooting Bobcats.
Four different Warhawks hit two three-pointers in the game, six dropping a triple in all.
Lavell Brodnex led the team with 31 points on the day, becoming the second Warhawk this season to cross 30 points.
MJ Russell,
Krystian Lewis and
Ayomide Bamisile all scored in double figures, Bamisile leading the defense with five rebounds.
Bamisile opened the scoring for the Warhawks to keep things close, Lewis drilling a three for the lead just two minutes in. A scoring run for the Bobcats set up the lead that they'd hold throughout the first half, even as Russell and Brodnex fought to keep ULM in it.
Back-to-back threes from
Dylan Diaz and Russell closed the gap with seven minutes on the clock.
Przemek Hartman also got in on the action beyond the arc, as a run cut the deficit to just two possessions.
Alex Molofeev dropped a handful of shots with the clock running down, closing the gap but unable to steal the lead, 45-43 at the halfway point.
The Bobcats got off to a hot start in the second half, DJ Hall taking control to maintain the lead. As multiple threes from ULM had them coming close, it was a triple drilled by Lewis that turned the tides and gave ULM the 53-52 lead with 16:34 on the clock.
Mark Drone of Texas State responded with a three of his own to regain control, Bamisile tying things up just a minute later. But the powers of Drone and Hall allowed for Texas State to pull away again, a scoring run preventing ULM to fully take over. Brodnex continued to rack up points with time running low, as the Bobcats sat with a comfortable lead. Bamisile wrapped things up with a layup in the final seconds, but Texas State claimed victory, 95-84.
The Warhawks will return to Fant-Ewing Coliseum for their final two home games, the first coming on Wednesday evening. Tipoff against the Troy Trojans is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
