Warhawks Drop Close Match vs. Troy

Three Warhawks reached double figures in the one-possession loss.

MONROE, La. – The ULM Warhawks (4-24, 1-14 Sun Belt) fell in their penultimate home game to the Troy Trojans (18-10, 10-5 Sun Belt) in a one-point game that fell to the final seconds. In forcing 10 turnovers out of the visitors and the Trojans collecting 22 fouls, 17 made free throws kept the Warhawks in the game. While Troy had the edge in the field and from beyond the arc, it was 74% free throw shooting to the Trojans' 65% that kept things competitive.

Krystian Lewis led the team with 19 points in his seventh-straight game with double digits, also collecting six rebounds and six assists. Lavell Brodnex pulled down five boards to go with his 13-point showing, while Renars closed out the double-digit scorers, hitting two triples for 12 points. Freshman Alex Molofeev led the charge on the defense with seven rebounds.

ULM was able to hold off the Trojans for the opening two possessions, with a block from MJ Russell and a forced turnover by Brodnex. But Cobi Campbell drilled a three-pointer with 18:46 on the clock to break open the scoring. Russell then collected four points to give ULM the lead and drive the momentum of the Warhawk offense. Troy had five turnovers in the first half, driven by ULM's defense as the home team capitalized.

With 15 minutes on the clock, Lewis dropped a stepback jumper for the lead, spurning nine lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. The Trojans picked up the advantage again, but Micah Caster tied the ball game, Renars Sondors converting a three-point play for another lead change. With Dylan Diaz for the Warhawks and Thomas Dowd for the Trojans hitting triples, the teams were going shot-for-shot as time began to wind down. Sitting in the ninth tie of the game, Sondors' dunk gave ULM the edge as the half came to a close, 37-35.

Troy opened the scoring in the second half, but Ayomide Bamisile landed a dunk to maintain the lead for the home team. Victor Valdes then tied the game back up, the Trojans continuing to hit shots, even as ULM responded. An alley-oop from Lewis to Brodnex brought the momentum back to the Warhawks, an and-one from Lewis saving the advantage.

Caster was able to pick up the defensive rebound and get the ball to Molofeev for the fastbreak score as the lead shifted back in ULM's favor. Cooper Campbell then hit a triple to anchor a scoring run for Troy, Caster responding and Molofeev tying the game with a triple with six minutes on the clock. Another run for the Trojans seemingly began to put it away, but two three-point plays from Lewis made it a one-possession game, Sondors' three-pointer with 46 seconds on the clock tying the ball game. But a shot by Kiel Kerrington with seven seconds on the clock sealed the 77-76 win for the Trojans.

The Warhawks will conclude play at home for the season on Saturday (Feb. 21), hosting Arkansas State in Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Tipoff against the Red Wolves is scheduled for 2 p.m.
