TROY, Ala.– The ULM women's basketball team (13-13, 6-9 Sun Belt) battled all the way to the end but fell 82-80 to Troy (21-5, 12-2 Sun Belt). The Warhawks, down as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter, outscored the Trojans 26-13 and finished the game with 14 three-pointers which is one shy of the program record for a single game.
Â
Nakiyah Mays-Prince established a new career high of 27 points behind a career best five three-pointers while also tying her career high in assists with 11.
Marcavia Shavers finished one point shy of her career high with 17 points while also grabbing a team high seven rebounds.
Jazmine Jackson (15) and
Asjah Inniss (14) knocked down five and four three-pointers respectively.
Â
After ULM opened the scoring off a jumper by
J'Mani Ingram, Troy responded with a 7-0 run at the beginning of the first quarter. A three-pointer by Inniss and a basket inside by Shavers would restore a one-point lead for the Warhawks. Both teams traded baskets during a mundane period of offense before Mays-Prince would connect on her first three-pointer off an offensive rebound to retake the lead. The Trojans would respond with a three of their own a few seconds before the buzzer to take a one-point lead into the break.   Â
Â
Troy would increase their advantage to begin the second quarter with a 10-3 run fueled by multiple efforts from beyond the arc. A three-pointer by Jackson and back-to-back baskets by Mays-Prince pulled ULM even with their hosts at 27. The Trojans would tighten up defensively while putting together a 9-0 run in response on the other end. Troy would tack on an additional 11-1 run after a pair of baskets by the Warhawks to claim their largest lead of the game going into halftime.
Â
The Warhawks began to chip away at the deficit to start the third quarter as buckets inside by Troy were answered by three-pointers from Inniss and Mays-Prince. The home side would again push the lead to 15 but back-to-back deep three-pointers by Jackson brought ULM back to within single digits. Troy would manage to halt the Warhawks' momentum just enough to finish the quarter with the same 15-point lead they had at the very beginning.
Â
Shavers would set the tone for the Warhawks to start the quarter as she beat her mark in the post both times for back-to-back baskets in the paint. The Trojans' restoration of a 15-point lead would be short lived as ULM would catch fire from three-point range as three different players made efforts from beyond the arc to contribute to an 11-0 run to cut the lead to just four.
Â
A three-pointer by Troy would not be enough to deny ULM at that point as the visitors continued to attack the basket successfully before another three-pointer by Inniss capped off a 9-0 run to give the Warhawks their first lead since the end of the first quarter.Â
Â
The Trojans regained the lead off of a pair of free throws and a tough basket inside, but Mays-Prince would tie the game at 80 after knocking down both of her free-throw attempts. The game would come down to the final sequence as Troy drew a foul with four seconds left and converted the ensuing free-throw attempts. Mays-Prince would see her heavily contested effort at the buzzer fall short as Troy were able to hold on to snap ULM's four-game winning streak.
Â
The Warhawks will have some extra time to prepare for their next contest as they are set to take on Georgia Southern in Statesboro on Saturday (Feb. 21). Tipoff from the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center is scheduled for noon C.T.
