KINGSVILLE, Texas – The ULM beach volleyball team (0-2) opened the season on Friday (Feb. 20), dropping two matches to UTEP and Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Javelina Classic.
Match 1: UTEP 4, ULM 1
ULM claimed a win in pair No. 1 with
Avery Hunter and
Madeline Marquez winning in three sets (21-18, 16-21, 15-11) over UTEP's Alexa Gonzalez Monreal and Krista Paegle. Flight four in
Brooke Bankston and
Maddie Peterson fell in two sets (17-21, 17-21) to Evelina Krieva and Deni McCalmont. Flight two, made up of graduate transfers
Natalie Taggart and
Izabela Zukowska, took the Miners to three sets with a set two win (21-18) before falling (15-21, 21-18, 10-15). Pair No. 5 (
Paige Ingersoll and
Ava Sondrup) fell to the Miners' Kennedy Llewellyn and Milana Popovic in straight sets, 12-21, 3-21. To wrap up,
Calli Otjen and
Abby Ryno for flight three fell in two sets (14-21, 18-21) to Iana Loera and Averie Threet.
Match 2: Texas A&M Kingsville 3, ULM 2
Flight five went to three sets as Ingersoll and Sondrup took the first set, 21-15. But the Javelinas' Kamryn Briggs and Clara Presmanes-Garate claimed victory in the last two sets, 21-19, 15-11. The Javelinas swept pair four as Bankston/Peterson fell 19-21, 18-21. It was a three-set winner for ULM for flight three (Otjen/Ryno), Warhawks claiming the 24-22 victory in the first set. After falling 21-17, the bounce back of 15-9 in set three had ULM capturing a win. Taggart/Zukowska fell in straight sets, 14-21, 22-24. Flight one went undefeated across both matches as Marquez and Hunter swept the Javelinas with a 25-23, 21-17 win.
