NEW ORLEANS – Nine runs scored and a strong pitching performance by ULM baseball produced a commanding 9-1 win over New Orleans Sunday evening.
Â
Both teams remained scoreless after the first inning, with the only action being a single by the Privateers.
Jake Haggard started the top of the second with a lead-off double, and
Dayne Wray walked to put runners at the corners with one out. The inning was ended by a double play, holding the Warhawks to zero.
Â
Kruise Newman lined a homer down the right field line to put UNO on the board 1-0 at the bottom of the second. The home team had the opportunity to do more damage, but a groundout ended the threat. The two teams produced no runs in the third and fourth innings as
JC Dermody collected five strikeouts in the first four frames.
Â
At the top of the fifth inning,
Dean Hannah and
Jackson Landry both singled to start things off for ULM. With one out,
Davis Mauzy powered a triple down the right field line to score both runners and end up at third, giving the Warhawks the lead.
Micah Dean joined in with a single of his own to bring home Mauzy, making the lead 3-1. The Privateers singled twice in the bottom half, but a 4-6-3 double play put away the scoring threat as Dermody pitched through five innings.
Â
With the bases loaded at the top of the sixth, Mauzy and Dean both walked to bring home two runs.
Bryce Blaser followed up with an infield single to make it a 6-1 game. Dermody struck out another batter in the bottom frame, ending his day with seven strikeouts. After a scoreless seventh, Dean singled to produce his second RBI of the day and made the lead six. With two base runners on, Haggard cleared the base pads with a two-RBI hit, producing a 9-1 score. UNO came up with nothing in the last two frames, sealing a Warhawk win and ending a three-game losing skid.
Â
Dermody collected his second win of the season, having a final line of 6 innings pitched, eight hits, one earned run and seven strikeouts, throwing 111 pitches.
Holden Hess entered in relief and recorded the save with two hits allowed and five strikeouts.
Â
Mauzy ended the day with three RBI with a hit and three walks as Dean had multiple-RBI and hit performances. Haggard went 3-5 with two RBI as Blaser also collected two hits with an RBI.
