MONROE, La. – The ULM baseball team (4-5) found a decisive victory over Grambling State (3-5) at Lou St. Amant Field on Tuesday (Feb. 24), with a 19-9, eight-inning win. Five different Warhawks had multi-hit games and multi-RBI games throughout the game.
Tyler Roark opened the top of the first with a strikeout and two ground-outs, setting up the ULM offense to get started. A single and two walks set up a wild pitch, which had
Micah Dean crossing home plate.
Dayne Wray then hit a two-run double for the 3-0 advantage through one inning. Three quick outs were found in the second, as ULM continued to lay it on in the bottom. Two walks and a hit-by-pitch allowed for
Bryce Blaser's RBI single to right field,
Jake Haggard following with a sacrifice fly to score the fifth run.
Kade Dupont then launched a 382-foot bomb to left field, scoring three more runs to find the 8-0 score.
A double play in the third shut down the Tigers, another Warhawk getting hit by pitch to lead off. Another hit-by-pitch and a single had Wray picking up another RBI with a single. Dupont stole home as the Warhawks reached double digits. While Shannon Martin was able to get a hit for the Tigers, two strikeouts closed out the fourth. The bases quickly got loaded for ULM again, a sacrifice fly from Haggard scoring the 11
th run.
But it was the fifth inning when the tides began to turn. Back-to-back walks set up a Ryan Davis RBI single, Grambling scoring its first run of the game. A Trey Bridges walk, Shannon Martin sacrifice fly and Cameron Hill single cut the advantage to seven as
Austin Ackel entered the game for ULM. A fielder's choice and an Aidan Lopez single scored two more for the 11-6 score in the middle of the fifth. The Tigers went on to keep the Warhawks scoreless in the fifth, while
Canaan Clayton entered for ULM and struck out three-straight batters.
Sutton Lewis hit an RBI double to extend the lead further, while
Bryce Blaser hit a 385-foot homer to score three more and make it a nine-run edge.
Dean Hannah's RBI single, a walk from
Zach White and a
Davis Mauzy single scored three more to round out the seven-run inning, placing the Warhawks ahead 12. But the Tigers were able to respond, Julio Vasquez and Aidan Lopez flying out to score a run, with Dillon Braxton singling to cut the lead to nine. A scoreless seventh for ULM sent the game to the eighth inning as Grambling State refused to give up.
Holding the Tigers scoreless in the top of the inning, it was up to ULM's offense to cross the 10-inning advantage. After
Dean Hannah was hit by a pitch,
Garrett Wiethorn singled to get on base.
Zach White closed things out with an RBI single, scoring the 19
th run for the Warhawks and securing the eight-inning victory.
Bryce Blaser and
Kade Dupont both led the team with three hits apiece, Blaser driving in four runs and both guys logging home runs. Three other Warhawks collected two hits each, the team also stealing seven bases.
Dayne Wray stole three bases to lead the team,
Micah Dean stealing two.
Tyler Roark is credited with the win, pitching 4.1 innings and striking out three batters.
The ULM baseball team will be back in action tomorrow (Feb. 24) to face Alcorn State at Lou St. Amant Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Braves.
