BUFFALO, N.Y.– The ULM women's basketball team (11-12, 5-8 Sun Belt) extended their winning streak to three games Saturday afternoon as they defeated Buffalo (2-21, 0-11 MAC) 73-64. The win secured the program's first ever MAC-SBC Challenge sweep after the Warhawks opened the season with an 80-71 at home vs. Eastern Michigan in November.
Â
Jazmine Jackson paced ULM in scoring for the second straight game as she scored 19 points while knocking down three attempts from three-point range.
Nakiyah Mays-Prince added 13 points and tied for the team lead with six assists.
J'Mani Ingram and
Marcavia Shavers each chipped in 12 points and at least six rebounds and two assists apiece.
Â
The Warhawks started out slow in the first quarter as they were unable to punish the Bulls for their turnovers while also struggling to keep the hosts off the offensive glass. A three by Jackson got ULM within two points before Buffalo would push the lead to seven. The Bulls managed to do it again after back-to-back baskets by Shavers and Ingram but an additional pair of baskets by Shavers off of feeds from Ingram had the Warhawks within five points after one.   Â
Â
Both offenses struggled in the second quarter with the first points not coming until almost three minutes in. After the Warhawks found themselves down by seven once again, another basket inside by Shavers ignited a 10-0 run capped off by a three from Mays-Prince to tie the game and an Ingram jumper to take the lead. The Bulls would recover in time to finish the quarter on a 6-2 run in order to take a one-point lead into halftime.
Â
An 8-2 run by Buffalo to start the third quarter forced ULM to take an early timeout but it was the jolt the Warhawks would need in the end. A pair of baskets off of drives by Jackson would bookend a 7-0 run by the Warhawks to tie the game at 38. After a period of trading baskets with their hosts, another three-pointer from Jackson would give the Warhawks a lead they would never relinquish. ULM would finish the quarter on an 11-2 run thanks to an Ingram layup at the buzzer to take a five-point lead into the final stanza.
Â
A basket from Mays-Prince and a three-pointer from
Asjah Inniss to open the fourth quarter gave the Warhawks their first double-digit lead of the afternoon. After Buffalo managed to chip away at the deficit,
Keshunti Nichols stepped up to knock down a long-range effort. The Bulls worked to get within five but baskets by
Asia Barclay and Ingram gave ULM the cushion it needed to make enough free throws down the stretch to claim the victory.
Â
The Warhawks shot 40 percent from three-point range while holding the Bulls to just 12.5 percent. They also forced Buffalo into 22 turnovers while only committing 11 themselves for their second fewest total of the season.
Â
ULM will return to Sun Belt Conference play on Thursday when they travel to take on Southern Miss. Tipoff from Reed Green Coliseum is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
