MONROE, La. – 17 total runs scored by ULM baseball (13-9, 3-0 Sun Belt) led the way in a wild 17-12 win over New Orleans (9-14, 3-6 Southland).
Â
All but one batter in the starting lineup produced a hit for the Warhawks as the team combined for 14 hits and 13 RBI.
Â
The Privateers struck first at the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Two straight doubles to start led to a two-RBI single by Miles Curley to put the away team in front. The Warhawks loaded the bases at the bottom frame with a
Davis Mauzy walk,
Micah Dean double and
Bryce Blaser walk.
Jake Haggard stepped up to the plate and drove a two-RBI single to tie the game up. A fielder's choice plated another run to give the home team control after one.
Â
UNO again scored two runs at the top frame of the second, using back-to-back base hits to take a 4-3 lead.
Zach White led off the bottom of the second with a double, but three straight outs ended the scoring opportunity and kept the Privateers in front.
Â
After Mauzy extended his hitting streak with a leadoff double, Dean walked before Blaser singled through the right field side, scoring a run to tie the game. With two runners in scoring position, Haggard produced another two-RBI single to give ULM a 6-4 advantage.
Marcus Aranda followed that up with his third home run of the season, marking his second in as many games, and put two more runs on the scoreboard.
Â
UNO responded in the next frame with a run scored to make the margin three. An error-filled bottom of the fourth inning produced four more runs for the Warhawks. Mauzy scored for the third time in the game with a throwing error before a wild pitch allowed Dean to score. A sequence that let Blaser and Haggard score brought two more across the plate, making it a 12-5 contest.
Â
A run from the away team in the top frame of the fifth put up the sixth run of the ballgame for UNO. In the next inning, a single and a groundout allowed a run to score, putting two more runs on the board for the Privateers, resulting in a 12-8 ULM lead. Dupont and White singled at the bottom of the inning, giving the Warhawks the runs back. A groundout into a double play allowed Dupont to score from third to cap off a three-run inning.
Â
With two runners on second and third in the next frame, Curley lined a triple to left center, scoring both runners. A sacrifice-fly brought home another run as the Warhawks' lead stood at 15-11. The home team couldn't answer at the bottom of the inning to keep the score the same going into the eighth.
Â
Collin Husser drilled a homer to left field, bringing the UNO score to 12 runs, trailing by three. A bases-loaded walk and a fielder's choice score two runs back for ULM in the bottom frame. Three more outs at the top of the ninth secured the win and the season sweep of the Privateers.
Â
Haggard led the team in RBI with four on the night, while Aranda and Blaser also had multi-RBI performances. Dean, Haggard, Dupont and White all totaled two hits. Mauzy also collected another hit, extending his streak to 22 games.
