MOBILE, Ala. – ULM baseball (13-10, 3-1 Sun Belt) dropped game one of the weekend series against South Alabama (15-7, 2-2 Sun Belt) via walk-off Friday night.
Â
It's the first conference loss of the season, and it snaps the five-game winning streak the Warhawks brought into the series.
Â
ULM was blanked in the top frame of the first, with a Bryce Balser walk being the only action. With two runners on and two outs at the bottom of the inning, Blake Guerin powered a three-run homer to left field, putting the Jaguars up 3-0. A throwing error and a base hit put runners at second and third, but a strikeout ended the inning, keeping the deficit at three.
Â
At the bottom of the second, USA put a runner on second with a lead-off single and a stolen base. Following that,
Adam Brodnax worked a strikeout and a double play to end the scoring threat. In the next frame, a leadoff single by
Jackson Landry and a single by Garrett Weithorn produced two base runners with no outs. With a sacrifice bunt by
Davis Mauzy bringing the runners over,
Micah Dean grounded out to the shortstop to score a run. A Blaser single in the right field gap put another run on the board, making it a 3-2 game.
Â
The Jaguars immediately responded in the bottom frame with a solo shot into right field by Puckett Stewart, resulting in a two-run margin. Both ULM and USA put two runners on base in the fourth inning, but neither team could score, continuing the two-run score going into five.
Â
With a Mauzy single and two walks, the Warhawks loaded the bases with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning and kept the away team down by two. A quick inning at the bottom of the fifth brought Brodnax through five frames, keeping the score 4-2.
Â
With two outs at the top frame of the sixth,
Jackson Landry hit an opposite-field home run, bringing ULM to within a single run with a 4-3 mark. At the bottom of the sixth,
Justin Robinson entered in relief and blanked the Jaguars with 11 total pitches, keeping the Warhawks within a run.
Â
With one out at the top of the seventh,
Jake Haggard lined a triple into right field to get into scoring position.
Marcus Aranda followed that up with a bloop single into shallow right field, bringing home Haggard and tying the game at 4-4. Robinson worked two scoreless frames at the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, with the latter being a five-pitch showing. The Warhawk bats came up empty in the top of the eighth and ninth innings, going three-up, three-down in both frames.
Â
The Jaguars loaded the bases with no outs at the bottom of the ninth. ULM produced two strikeouts with a chance to get out of the jam, but a single perfectly placed at the right field line scored the winning run from third, giving game one to the home team. Â
Â
Aranda and Landry both produced multi-hit games while also adding an RBI. Dean and Blaser were the other two batters accounting for the runs scored.
Â
The Warhawks are back tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. in Mobile.
