Baseball Evens Up Series in 9-6 Win

Davis Mauzy hit 4-6 with a double and a triple, extending his hitting streak.

MOBILE, Ala. – An offensive showcase propelled ULM baseball (14-10, 4-1 Sun Belt) to a 9-6 win over South Alabama (15-8, 2-3 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon.

The Warhawks produced 15 total hits with five hitters collecting multi-hit games. They also hit three doubles, a triple and a home run on the day.

With two outs at the top of the first inning, a Bryce Blaser walk and a Haggard single put runners at the corners. A fielding error on a ball hit by Marcus Aranda at the next at-bat scored Blaser from third and put ULM up 1-0. Brandt Corley only needed five pitches to close out the bottom frame, with a strikeout ending the inning.

After a Garrett Wiethorn walk with two outs at the top of the second, Davis Mauzy collected a hit to extend his hitting streak to 24 before Micah Dean lined a base hit to right field, bringing Wiethorn home and setting the score at 2-0 Warhawks. Corley allowed a single through the bottom of the next two innings to keep the Warhawks in front going into the fourth.

A groundout to start the inning was followed up by a Weithorn single and a Davis Mauzy double to put runners at second and third. Blaser sent a ball to the outfield with one out, bringing home Wiethorn and extending the lead to 3-0. The Jaguars used a single at the bottom of the fourth to score a run from second base, getting onto the board and cutting the margin to two.

Marcus Aranda started the fifth with a solo homer to left field, marking his third of the season. The Warhawks were able to load the bases before a Mauzy single drove in a run, making the score 5-1.

With two outs at the bottom of the fifth, Duncan Matthews lined a single into right field to score a run, bringing USA a run closer with a three-run margin. In the next frame, Haggard and Kade Dupont reached second and third base, but the Warhawks couldn't bring them home, keeping the score at 5-2.

A double and two walks resulted in a bases-loaded jam with no outs. ULM pitching produced two straight strikeouts, but two more free passes scored a pair of runs for USA, making it a one-run ballgame. A swinging strikeout ended the inning, preventing more damage as the Warhawks preserved the lead.

With runners at second and third again for the away team, Blaser produced another RBI via sacrifice fly, giving ULM a run back. A double by Haggard and a single by Aranda put two more runs on the board, resulting in a 7-4 ballgame. The Jaguars responded with a Blake Guerin homer into left field, making the margin two going into the eighth.

With two away and Jackson Landry at first, Mauzy lined a triple into the right field corner, scoring Landry from first and making it a four-run game. Paxton Bigby led off the bottom frame with a home run, resulting in a 9-6 score. After a scoreless top half of the ninth, Tyler Roark struck out three straight batters to seal the win and even the series.

Mauzy led the team in hitting, going 4-6 with a double and a triple while producing two RBI. Aranda also collected two hits with three RBI and a home run on the day. Dean, Haggard and Wiethorn had multiple hits, with Blaser also producing two RBI.

On the mound, Caleb Strmiska earned the win, pitching the Warhawks out of the jam at the bottom of the sixth with three strikeouts. Roark got his first save of the season, finishing the game with three innings pitched and seven strikeouts.

ULM is back tomorrow against the Jaguars with the rubber match scheduled for 1 p.m.
