MOBILE, Ala. – 12 runs scored in the first three innings by South Alabama (16-8, 3-3 Sun Belt) led to a 16-4 loss taken by ULM baseball (14-11, 4-2 Sun Belt) Sunday afternoon.
Â
ULM struck first at the top of the first inning to take the early lead. A
Davis Mauzy walk and
Micah Dean single put both of them on base before a
Bryce Blaser fly out advanced Mauzy to third. Dean stole second as Mauzy scored on the double steal. After a throwing error put Dean at third, a
Marcus Aranda fly out scored the runner, resulting in a 2-0 score.
Â
The Jaguars responded with an offensive explosion at the bottom of the first. A lead-off double followed by a single scored the first run for the home team. After two outs were recorded, three straight walks tied the game at 2-2 before two straight base hits scored four more runs, resulting in a four-run margin at the end of one.
Â
Two straight base hits by
Jackson Landry and
Garrett Wiethorn started the second inning before a Mauzy single brought home a run and cut the deficit to three. USA answered again in the bottom of the second with a Blake Guerin three-run homer, setting the gap to six runs.
Â
Three more runs at the bottom of the third made it a 12-3 game in favor of USA.
Zach White powered a solo home run in the very next frame, marking his second of the season and his career overall. The Jaguars plated four more at the bottom of the fifth, which was helped by a three-run homer by Nate Wood.
Â
The Warhawks were unable to score in the final three frames, resulting in a 16-4 run-rule defeat.
