Baseball Wins Series Over Ragin' Cajuns

Jake Haggard collected his sixth home run of the season at the top of the ninth inning.

LAFAYETTE, La. – Three home runs hit by ULM baseball (16-12, 6-2 Sun Belt) resulted in a 7-3 win over the Ragin' Cajuns (17-10, 2-6 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon.

Brandt Corley earned his second win of the season, going five innings with one run allowed and five strikeouts. Holden Hess collected his second straight save as he struck out three.

Davis Mauzy started the top of the first inning with a lead-off walk, but was thrown out at first base as ULM came away with nothing. Brandt Corley allowed two walks at the bottom of the first but didn't allow a run to come home as the score remained at 0-0 after one.

Jake Haggard started the top of the second with a lead-off single before Marcus Aranda walked. A bunt put them both at second and third before a Kade Dupont sacrifice-fly brought Haggard home, putting ULM on the board.

At the bottom of the third with one out, a single followed by a double at the left field corner appeared to tie the game, but a perfect relay by the Warhawks' defense prevented the run from scoring.

Both teams came up empty in the fourth inning, with the only offense being a single by the Cajuns in the bottom frame. A Dupont single and a Mauzy base hit resulted with runners at the corners at the top of the fifth, but a groundout ended the threat and kept the margin at one.

A lead-off double for the Cajuns started things off at the bottom of the fifth. With the runner at third base, a fielder's choice on a ground ball allowed the runner to score, tying the game at 1-1. The Cajuns were looking to do more damage with the bases loaded, but a flyout to left field ended the inning, keeping the game tied.

Blaser led off the top of the sixth with a solo home run to right-center field, good for his second of the year. With two outs in the inning, Dayne Wray blasted one to left field, marking his eighth of the season and giving ULM a 3-1 lead.

The Cajuns took two walks to start the bottom of the sixth inning, but a groundout and a double play ended the threat, keeping the Warhawks ahead by two. The home team struck in the bottom of the next inning, producing a lead-off home run by Donovan LaSalle to make the score 3-2.

Haggard led off the top of the eighth with a double into left field, Dupont collected his second RBI of the day with a single, scoring Haggard from second and giving the Warhawks a 4-2 lead. After a single to lead off the bottom half, a double down the right field line scored the run for the Cajuns, resulting in a 4-3 score. ULM was able to limit the damage with another double-play with runners on first and second to retain the lead going into the ninth.

Micah Dean reached on a throwing error by the pitcher as Blaser drew a walk to put two runners on for Haggard. The first baseman drilled a three-run homer into left field, extending the ULM lead to 7-3. Hess struck out three batters at the bottom of the ninth and sealed the game and the series.

Haggard led the team with three hits as well as three RBI and three runs scored on the day. Dupont also had multi-hit and RBI days with two of each.

The Warhawks will go for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon in Lafayette with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
