LAFAYETTE, La. – Missed opportunities for ULM baseball (16-13, 6-3 Sun Belt) resulted in a 4-0 game three loss against the Ragin' Cajuns Sunday afternoon.
Â
ULM was shut out for just the second time this season in the loss despite having the same number of hits as the other team with seven.
Â
Both teams produced nothing in the first inning as the score remained at zero through two frames. The trend continued through the end of the third inning, as the Warhawks were sent down in order.
JC Dermody also held the Cajuns scoreless, collecting two strikeouts in the process.
Â
At the bottom of the fourth with a runner at second, a single through the left side brought a run home, giving the home team the lead for the first time since game one.
Â
ULM had a chance to immediately respond at the top of the fifth, using a combined three singles from
Jake Haggard,
Marcus Aranda and
Kade Dupont to load the bases with one out. Two straight strikeouts ended the threat and kept the score 1-0 in favor of the Cajuns.
Â
Jayce LaCava extended the home team's lead at the bottom of the fifth with a home run over the left field wall, making it a 2-0 ballgame. The Warhawks threatened again with two runners on with one out at the top of the sixth, but a double play blanked the away team once again. Two more runs in the bottom half via a double and a bases-loaded walk put the Cajuns up 4-0.
Â
A hit by pitch and a
Garrett Wiethorn single put two runners on with no one out for ULM at the top of the eighth. With one out,
Micah Dean singled to load the bases once again, but a double play kept the Warhawks off the board through eight innings. Three straight outs at the top of the ninth resulted in the shutout loss.
Â
Dean represented the only multi-hit game for ULM as Mauzy was able to collect another hit, marking 28 of 29 games with a hit for him this season.
Â
The Warhawks are back on the diamond Tuesday afternoon with a midweek contest at rival Louisiana Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
