RUSTON, La. – An eight-run top of the fourth inning catapulted ULM baseball (17-13, 6-3 Sun Belt) to a seven-inning 14-3 win over Louisiana Tech (15-15, 4-5 CUSA) Tuesday evening.
Â
The Warhawks totaled 17 hits on the day compared to LTU's five. The away team also committed no errors defensively for the seventh consecutive game.
Â
ULM went down in order with two strikeouts to start the game at the top of the first. The Bulldogs worked two straight walks with two outs, but a pop-up to the catcher ended the inning and kept the game scoreless. The Warhawks were able to get two runners on base with two outs as
Jackson Landry came up to the plate. The first baseman singled through the left side, bringing
Davis Mauzy home to give the away team an early 1-0 lead.
Â
With one out at the bottom of the second, Matt Houston belted a home run to left field to tie the game up at 1-1. LTU put two runners on again at first and second, but a fly out to foul territory kept the two teams in a deadlock.
Â
At the top of the third with two outs and a runner on first,
Marcus Aranda sent a ball over the left field wall, going 391 feet for his fifth homer of the year to put ULM on top 3-1.
Justin Robinson entered the game at the bottom of the third and forced a three-up, three-down inning with a strikeout.
Â
Landry and
Garrett Wiethorn got on base and were moved over due to a groundout to put two runners in scoring position with one out. A wild pitch scored Wiethorn from third, making it a three-run game. With two outs, Haggard singled, scoring a run to make the score 5-1.
Â
Two free passes forced a bases-loaded situation for the home team, still with two down. A
Kade Dupont single,
Dayne Wray walk, and Landry hit by pitch produced three runs to result in a seven-run margin. Weithorn and
Bryce Blaser both singled to drive in three more runs, capping off an eight-run inning and leading to an 11-1 score.
Â
Hayden Gustavson homered at the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to nine. Aranda collected a sacrifice fly in the next inning to get the run back, making a 12-2 mark on the scoreboard. Trey Hawsey responded with a home run for the Bulldogs, bringing the margin back to nine runs.
Â
A Blaser single and an Aranda sac-fly provided ULM with two more runs at the top of the sixth. Robinson pitched through two more scoreless innings to force the run-rule victory for the Warhawks.
Â
With five innings pitched and two runs allowed, Robinson earned his first win of the season. He also collected three strikeouts and allowed no walks through 60 pitches thrown.
Â
Offensively, Aranda led the way with four RBI and two hits on the day. Blaser, Wiethorn and Landry also had multi-RBI performances. The two at the bottom of the order collected three hits each as well.
Â
ULM is back on the diamond at Lou St. Amant field with a Sun Belt weekend series against Georgia State from Thursday, Apr. 2, through Saturday, Apr. 4.
