ARLINGTON, Texas – A late rally at the top of the ninth was countered by a walk-off at the bottom frame as ULM baseball (8-8) dropped game one of the weekend series vs. UT Arlington (4-9) Friday evening.
Â
Down 3-1, the Warhawks used a sacrifice fly and a single to score the two runs needed to extend the game, but couldn't stop the home team from answering.
Â
Both teams started the game with scoreless frames as runners for the Warhawks and Mavericks were left stranded. At the top of the second, a pair of infield hits by
Garrett Wiethorn and
Davis Mauzy combined with an error loaded the bases with two outs. A groundout to the third baseman got the out and ended the threat.
Â
Adam Brodnax collected another strikeout at the bottom of the second to keep UTA scoreless. After ULM was blanked at the top of the third, with a base runner in scoring position, an RBI-single put the Mavericks on the board with a 1-0 score. A fielding error allowed another runner to score from second base to make the deficit two runs.
Â
A UTA hit was all for both teams over the fourth and fifth innings, keeping the game at a 2-0 result. At the top of the sixth with one out,
Jake Haggard got on base with an infield single. With a wild pitch allowing him to move over to second,
Marcus Aranda lined a hit through the left side to score Haggard and put ULM on the board.
Â
The Mavericks were able to put a runner on second with two outs in the bottom frame, but a fielder's choice kept the margin at one. At the bottom of the seventh, UTA produced a scoring opportunity with a runner on third base with no outs. A strikeout, lineout and flyout forced by
Tyler Roark ended the inning and kept it a 2-1 ballgame.
Â
With two outs in the bottom frame of the eighth inning, an RBI-single plated a third run for the Mavericks, resulting in a 3-1 score. At the top of the ninth,
Kade Dupont was hit by a pitch as Aranda singled through the left side. A wild pitch sailed past the catcher to bring both runners over and into scoring position.
Â
Zach White hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Dupont and cut the margin to a single run. With
Jackson Landry up to the plate, he lined a single to bring home the tying run, extending the game to the bottom of the ninth.
Â
A lead-off single and fielding error put two runners on for the Mavericks to start the inning before a Xander McAfee single down the left field line brought home the winning run and secured the game one victory for the home team.
Â
Brodnax's final line presented six innings pitched with five hits allowed, one earned run, and three strikeouts with 100 total pitches thrown. On the offensive side, Haggard and Aranda collected multi-hit games.
Â
Game two between the two teams is scheduled for 6 p.m. tomorrow evening in Arlington.
