ARLINGTON, Texas – ULM baseball (8-9) dropped game two of the weekend series to UT Arlington (5-9) 9-5 Saturday night.
Â
Despite scoring four runs in the first four innings, the Warhawks were held to just a single run the rest of the way as the Mavericks produced runs in all but two innings in the contest.
Â
Davis Mauzy led off the game with a hit, extending his hitting streak to 17 games to start the season.
Bryce Blaser produced a single to put two runners on and stole second to produce runners in scoring position.
Jake Haggard followed that up with an RBI to allow Mauzy to score from third.
Marcus Aranda collected his third hit of the series to bring home another run, resulting in a 2-0 lead.
Â
After a walk and a single at the bottom of the first, an RBI-single put the Mavericks on the board and cut the deficit to a single run with runners at the corners with no outs. After two
Brandt Corley strikeouts, a fly-out to Mauzy at center field ended the inning and limited the damage.
Â
Hits by
Zach White and Mauzy, combined with a hit by pitch to
Dayne Wray, produced a bases-loaded situation with two outs, but a strikeout ended the threat and kept the lead to one run. After a leadoff single at the bottom of the second, Caylon Dygert sent a ball to deep center field, which led to an inside-the-park home run, putting UTA ahead 3-2.
Â
A single and two stolen bases by Harold Laracuente, combined with an infield single, made it 4-2 Mavericks. The home team proceeded to load the bases before a fielder's choice to third ended the inning. Haggard started the top of the third with a leadoff double but was thrown out attempting to score on a groundball. After a
Jackson Landry single, White lined a ball down the left field line to score a run and cut the margin to one.
Â
At the top of the fourth, Wray used a walk and a Haggard single to move to third base before Aranda lined a hit into center field to drive in his second run of the game to tie it 4-4. A pair of RBI singles gave the lead right back to UTA as the scoreboard presented a 6-4 mark after the fourth inning.
Â
The Mavericks added another run on the board after a fielding error allowed a run to score, making the deficit three runs. The Warhawks came up empty at the top of the sixth and seventh innings, and the Mavericks tacked on two more to make it a 9-4 game going into the eighth.
Â
ULM threatened at the top frame, putting three runners on to load the bases. Blaser brought a run home to cut the gap to four, but two runners were stranded to end the opportunity. An empty top of the ninth finalized the loss for game two and the series.
Â
Mauzy and White both collected three-hit performances as Aranda and Haggard also totaled multiple hits on the night. Aranda also drove in two runs, bringing his RBI total to three on the weekend.
Â
ULM will look to salvage a win in the series finale tomorrow afternoon in Arlington at 1 p.m.
