Baseball Falls to Dukes 11-3

Kade Dupont reached base four times, recording three hits.

MONROE, La. – ULM baseball (22-20, 9-10 Sun Belt) dropped game one of the weekend series vs. James Madison (17-23, 7-12 Sun Belt) 11-3 Friday afternoon.

After two outs to start the game, an error and a base hit to right-center field put two runners on for the Dukes. A pop-up to center ended the early scoring opportunity and kept the game scoreless. Dayne Wray doubled to start the game, and a walk and sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position. Marcus Aranda hit a flyout to right field, bringing Wray home and giving ULM the early 1-0 advantage.

Both teams went three up, three down in the second inning and the top frame of the third. After a hit by pitch hand single by Bryce Blaser, a double play allowed Dean to score from third, making it a 2-0 game for ULM. JMU caught fire in the fourth, raking for seven hits in eight at-bats, scoring six runs. The inning was highlighted by a three-run homer by Ike Schmidly.

The score remained 6-2 through the fifth inning as the two teams went three-up, three-down. With a runner on first at the top of the sixth inning with two outs, a double to right field sent the runner around third, but a throw by Wiethorn got him out at home. ULM saw traffic on the base paths with a Kade Dupont double and Zach White single in the bottom frame. Two straight outs ended the inning as the Warhawks faced a four-run hole after six.

Two total home runs by Wyett Campbell and Schmidly produced another three runs for the Dukes as they extended the lead to seven runs. Wiethorn produced an RBI-single the shorten the gap to 9-3, but another two runs by JMU at the top of the ninth finalized the 11-3 final.

The Warhawks are back for game two tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
