MONROE, La. – A four-run bottom of the sixth inning led to ULM baseball (23-20, 10-10 Sun Belt) evening the series with a 6-4 win over James Madison (17-24, 7-13 Sun Belt).
Â
"It was a big bounce-back win," head coach
Ford Pemberton said. "I was really proud of how our guys responded after yesterday's game."
Â
In opposition to game one, it was the Dukes striking first on Saturday with an RBI single scoring the runner from second, resulting in a 1-0 ballgame. The score was the only mark in the first four innings, as JMU was held to a single hit entering the fifth. For the Warhawks, they were shut down entirely, producing no hits and putting no one on base.
Â
After a scoreless top of the fifth, a
Jake Haggard walk and a
Kade Dupont single put two runners on before a double steal. Sent them into scoring position. With two outs,
Garrett Wiethorn sent a ball through the right field side to score two runs, giving ULM a 2-1 lead.
Â
Ike Schmidly wasted no time in responding for James Madison, belting a homer with two runners on to give the Dukes control with a two-run lead. The Warhawks responded in the very next frame. Danye Wray reached on an error before a
Bryce Blaser single put runners at the corners. With the pair at second and third, Haggard lined a ball through the right side, scoring two and tying the game at 4-4.
Â
"As the game went on, we started to run more offensively," Pemberton said. "Our guys did a good job on the hit and runs."
Â
Dupont made his mark on the scoreboard with a single, giving ULM the lead as Haggard crossed home plate. Wiethorn provided some insurance with an infield single to the pitcher, which scored another. After a scoreless inning at the top of the seventh, the Warhawks had a chance to add on with the bases loaded, but a fielder's choice out left them loaded
Â
The Dukes only managed a walk the rest of the way as
Tyler Roark secured the win with a 6-4 final score, tying the series. Roark's final line included four innings pitched with one run allowed and seven strikeouts.
Â
"I thought Roark did a great job on the back end," Pemberton said. "He was on today, and that was big."
Â
Brandt Corley pitched a solid five innings, allowing three runs with five strikeouts. Dupont and Wiethorn both collected multi-hit performances. The outfielder also produced three RBI, while Haggard also had multiple RBI.
