TROY, Ala. – The ULM Warhawks (34-18, 16-4 Sun Belt) clinched their sixth-straight conference series in a 6-2 win over the Troy Trojans (31-18, 8-12 Sun Belt) on Saturday (April 25). Two Warhawks recorded multi-hit games as ULM scored six runs off nine hits, holding the home team to two runs off seven hits.
While a lead-off strikeout had the opening frame looking good for the Trojans, a walk was allowed immediately after. This set up
Maryssa Zenzen to drive in the first run of the game with an RBI single. With the one-run advantage, pitcher
Dakota Lake struck out a batter on the way to a quick three outs.
The four-spot in the second is what gave ULM the edge throughout the contest, beginning with a lead-off walk from
Carson Jansky.
Elle Carter followed things up with a single,
Carys Platt doing the same to load the bases. With the bases juiced,
Brooklin Lippert hit a three-RBI triple down the left field line, giving the Warhawks the 4-0 lead. A passed ball had Lippert scoring the fourth run of the frame as ULM led by five runs. A lead-off single had Troy working to respond, but a quick three outs shut things down.
While two runners landed on base in the top of the third with Zenzen singling and another walk, three outs prevented the lead extension. Lake opened the bottom frame with a strikeout as the Warhawks cruised through three with a strong advantage. The Trojan defense worked to keep ULM off the board in the fourth, succeeding and turning around with a score themselves. Kiley Huffman led off with a single as Mia Tidmore hit an RBI double to land on the scoreboard. A wild pitch scored another as Troy chipped away at the lead.
In the fifth inning,
Olivia Faggard led off with a single, reaching second and stealing third as she crossed home plate when
Meagan Brown grounded out. While Makaley Boswell tripled to centerfield in the bottom, the Warhawk defense prevented additional scores and held onto the four-run edge. Another hit from Carter got the Warhawks in good position in the sixth, but she was left stranded as the Trojans took another attempt at finding the win. While a lead-off single had the home team with the edge, Lake struck out back-to-back batters to shut it down.
Another hit in the seventh gave Zenzen her third, but the score remained unchanged. Lydia Kirby then doubled to lead off in the comeback attempt, Presley Ivey following with a single as two runners reached bases. A hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with one out on the board, a quick final two outs secured as ULM found the series win, 6-2.
Maryssa Zenzen (3-for-4) led the team with three hits on the day, her first three-hit game of the season.
Elle Carter also saw a multi-hit game with two.
Brooklin Lippert picked up her first three-RBI game of her career and first multi-RBI game of the season, marking her first triple of the season. Four other Warhawks claimed hits. On the defensive end,
Kelsey Kovar led the team with six as the catcher.
Dakota Lake went the distance in the pitching circle, with her third complete game. She pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs, two walks and striking out six batters.
The Warhawks have now claimed six consecutive conference series, six series being the most in a season since 1997. The 10-game win streak leads the conference, the next-highest streak being three. ULM holds onto the lead in the Sun Belt as well, going 10-1 in the month of April.
ULM will conclude the series against the Trojans at noon on Sunday (April 25). The Warhawks will be on the hunt for their third-straight series sweep.
