JONESBORO, Ark. - The ULM volleyball team (5-9, 0-1) fell in straight sets to Arkansas State (5-7, 1-0) in the Sun Belt conference opener on Thursday evening. Abby Cunningham led the Warhawks with eight kills, an assist, three digs and a solo block.
The Red Wolves jumped out to a large lead, never surrendering throughout the whole set. Abby Cunningham scored ULM's first two points on big swings, but Arkansas State carried a 15-7 lead into the break. The Red Wolves continued to dominate coming out of the media timeout, and went on to take the set 25-13.
The Warhawks settled into the match early in the second set, starting with three straight points. Arkansas State got right back into the match, trading points with ULM. The set saw 14 ties and five lead changes, but the Red Wolves pulled away late, going on a 4-0 run to lead 22-18. The Warhawks attempted to keep Arkansas State at bay with a block from Tatum Clay and Grace Troxell, but the Red Wolves got within one of clinching the match with a 25-20 set win.
Arkansas State carried its momentum into the third set, scoring seven straight points to lead 7-2. The Warhawks cut the deficit to as few as four points, but the Red Wolves continued to score in large batches to run away with the set. Arkansas State clinched the match with the 25-13 third-set win.
The Red Wolves' defense out-blocked the Warhawks 13-5 and had 55 digs to the Warhawks' 42.
