MONROE, La.?On a night when
Ben Soignier played all nine positions in the field, it was what he did at the
plate that made the crowd at Warhawk Field get on their feet. The senior
All-American tied the ULM career doubles record and hit a towering three-run
home run as the Warhawks defeated Houston Baptist 11-7 Friday night.
Soignier finished the night
3-for-4 with three RBIs to pull within eight hits of the all-time ULM hits
record. Nick Wade homered in his fourth straight game and finished 2-for-3 with
three runs scored and Jordy Poche was 2-for-3 after entering the game in the
fifth inning.
Houston Baptist took a 4-2
lead into the fourth inning, but the Warhawks (27-25) plated a run in that inning
and the fifth inning to tie the game. ULM then exploded for six runs in the
sixth inning to stake a 10-5 lead.
Ryan McMillan and Soignier
homered in the inning and Boomer Blanchard drove home a pair of runs with a
single to left field.
Soignier started the game behind
the plate and made his way around the field before finishing the game on the
mound. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning and struck out two batters. Corey Brown
(3-2) picked up the win for the Warhawks throwing three innings in relief of
Justin Anderson. Brown allowed two runs on three hits to go with three
strikeouts.
Tristan Gaines (1-7) took the
loss for Houston Baptist (10-36) allowing nine runs ? seven earned ? on 10 hits
over 5.1 innings.
