MONROE,
La.-Arkansas State defeated
ULM 10-6 Saturday afternoon at Warhawk Field to clinch the Sun Belt
series
victory.
Todd Baumgartner
was 2-for-4
with three RBIs and Giovanni Garcia was 2-for-4 with three runs scored
and a
pair of RBIs to lead the Red Wolves (20-11, 10-4 Sun Belt) at the plate.
Seven different
Warhawks had a
base hit on the afternoon led by Jarrett Hammond's 1-for-3, three-RBI
day.
Shane Ardoin and Josh Gill also drove in runs for ULM (12-19, 3-8).
Arkansas State put
three runs
on the board in the top of the first inning for the second straight day.
The
Red Wolves drew four straight walks to open the game and Ryan Emery
drove home
two with a single off the wall in left field.
Jordan Castaldo
doubled home
Jordan Kimball in the second with a double off the top of the wall in
center
field after Kimball led off the inning with a single.
After a pair of
scoreless
innings, Baumgartner and Murray Watts had back-to-back run-scoring hits
in the
fifth - Baumgartner a single back up the middle and Watts a home run to
center
field. The Red Wolves added four more in the sixth to increase their
lead to
10-0.
The Warhawks
rallied with five
runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Nick Wade and Judd Edwards had
a pair
of singles around a Josh Chappell walk to load the bases. Gill drew a
walk for
the first run of the frame and then Hammond cleared the bases with a
double
into the gap in left-center. Hammond came home to score on a fielding
error by
the Red Wolves.
The Warhawks put a
couple of
runners on base in the ninth with a pair of one-out singles by Perry
Smith and
pinch hitter Jordy Poche. Ardoin hit a deep fly ball to center field to
allow
Smith to tag up and score on the sacrifice fly.
Ross Humes (4-1)
picked up the
win after he allowed just one hit and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings
before leaving
the game with an injury.
Drew Granier (3-3)
allowed
eight runs on seven hits over five innings of work in the losing effort
for the
Warhawks. He struck out six and walked five before handing the ball off
to Josh
Miller who threw four innings and allowed just two runs.
The teams wrap up
the series
Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. It will be Kids Day at Warhawk Field and all
children 12 and under will be admitted free and will have an opportunity
to run
on the field with their favorite Warhawk player for the National Anthem.
