MOBILE, Ala.-South
Alabama
scored six runs on just one hit in the sixth inning to rally past ULM
13-8 Saturday
afternoon in Sun Belt Conference baseball action at Stanky Field. The
come-from-behind victory clinched the series victory for the Jaguars.
ULM took an 8-4
lead into the
sixth inning after a sacrifice fly by Boomer Blanchard and an RBI double
by Nick
Wade in the top half of the frame - Wade has four doubles, two home runs
and
six RBIs in three games this week.
The Jaguars (26-14,
13-4 Sun
Belt), who entered the day in first place in the league standings,
scored the
first three runs of the inning on a balk and a pair of walks with the
bases
loaded. The fourth run of the inning scored on what could have been an
inning-ending double play, but the Warhawks couldn't handle the grounder
allowing a run to score and the inning to continue. The only hit of the
frame drove
in two runs. Jake Overstreet hit a sharp line drive to third base and
the ball deflected
off Nick Wade's glove for a base hit.
One night after
out-hitting
the Jaguars, ULM matched South Alabama hit-for-hit on Saturday as both
teams
finished with 10. Caleb Clowers, Wade, Kelvin York and Perry Smith all
had two
base hits for the Warhawks - York drove in three runs and Blanchard
plated a
pair.
The Warhawks jumped
out
quickly on South Alabama starter Garrett Harris for six runs in the
first four
innings of the game. York put the Warhawks on top 3-0 in the top of the
first
inning with his first home run of the season. Blanchard reached on a
dropped
fly ball by Taylor White in center field, Wade walked and traded places
with
Judd Edwards who grounded into a fielder's choice before York's 3-run
blast.
Perry Smith singled
and later
scored on a single through the right side of the infield by Clowers in
the
second. Wade led off the third with a single and came around to score on
a
grounder by Jarrett Hammond and Blanchard pushed across the sixth run of
the
game with a single through the left side to score Smith after he led off
the
fourth reaching on a walk.
South Alabama began
its rally
with four runs in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by White and a 3-run
home run off the bat of Brandon Brown. Tyler Vick kept the inning alive
with a
two-out single through the left side of the infield on an 0-2 pitch.
Jake Overstreet was
2-for-5
with a pair of RBIs for the Jaguars while Sean Laird was 2-for-2 with
three
runs scored.
Carlton Paris (2-0)
picked up
the win in relief for South Alabama tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He
struck
out five ULM batters and allowed just one hit. Harris allowed eight runs
-
three earned - on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
James Jones (3-4)
took the
loss for the Warhawks after allowing nine runs - six earned - on seven
hits in
5 1/3 innings of work. He had only thrown 48 pitches entering the sixth
inning,
but threw 37 in the frame before being lifted for Corey Brown.
The Warhawks
(13-22, 3-11) will
try and salvage a game on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the
three-game set.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game can be heard live on
540 AM in
northeast Louisiana and worldwide on the internet at ulmwarhawks.com.
