MONROE, La.-James
Jones threw
eight strong innings and the ULM bats came alive as the Warhawks
defeated
Binghamton 15-3 Friday night in the first game of a three-game series at
Warhawk Field.
Jones (3-2), who
recorded his
fourth quality start in his last five outings, struck out nine Bearcat
batters
and scattered five hits. He allowed just three runs, all of which came
in the
fourth inning, and worked five 1-2-3 innings on the night.
Perry Smith and
Josh Chappell
were both 3-for-4 at the plate to pace an ULM offensive attack that
belted out 13 hits.
Jarrett Hammond and Shane Ardoin each drove in a career-high three runs
on two
hits.
The
Warhawks (10-16), who snapped a six-game losing streak with the victory,
jumped
on Binghamton starter James Giulietti for eight runs in just over four
innings
after he entered the game having allowed just four runs over 30 1/3
innings on
the season.
Hammond
opened the scoring for ULM in the second inning with a single to left to
plate Smith
after he reached on a two-out walk. Ardoin followed with a two-run
single back
up the middle to give the Warhawks a 3-0 lead.
Boomer
Blanchard put the Warhawks up 4-0 when he scored on a grounder off the
bat of
Judd Edwards in the third. Blanchard was hit by a pitch to lead off the
inning and moved to
third on a double by Nick Wade. Smith followed with a single to right to
score
Wade. Edwards scored the third run of the frame on a groundout by
Hammond.
Dave
Ciocchi doubled home Jim Calderone and Henry Dunn after the pair led off
the
visitor's half of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles. Ciocchi
later
scored on a double down the line in left field by Joe Charron to pull
the
Bearcats (6-12) within three, 6-3.
Jordy Poche
doubled home Wade in the fourth, Blanchard brought home Chappell with a
sacrifice fly in the fifth and Smith scored on an error in the seventh
to
extend the ULM lead out to 9-3.
The
Warhawks took away any hope of a Binghamton comeback with six runs in
the
eighth inning. Chappell, Hammond, Ardoin and Blanchard all had RBIs for
ULM in
the frame.
Giulietti
(2-2) took the loss for the Bearcats as he was charged with seven earned
runs
on six hits over 4 1/3 innings of work.
The teams
wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
There will
be an Easter egg hunt in between the two games in front of Warhawk
Field.
