Chappell's Homer Lifts ULM Past Binghamton 5-2 in Game One of Doubleheader

Baseball
MONROE, La.-Josh Chappell hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning to lift ULM past Binghamton 5-2 Saturday afternoon in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader at Warhawk Field. Drew Granier went seven strong innings on the mound for the Warhawks as he struck out six batters and allowed just one run.

Judd Edwards and Perry Smith led off the ULM (11-16) half of the sixth with back-to-back singles before Chappell crushed a 3-2 fastball from Jay Lynch deep over the wall in left field to break a 1-1 tie. Following an out, Shane Ardoin and Caleb Clowers belted back-to-back doubles to cap the four-run inning.

Granier (3-2) did not issue a walk and set the Bearcats down in order over four consecutive innings - third to the sixth - after he scattered five hits in the opening two frames. Wil Browning moved into a tie for 10th place with Bobby Carro on the ULM single-season saves list as he earned his fifth of the season. He tossed the final 1 2/3 innings of the game and struck out a pair.

Clowers was 2-for-4 with an RBI for his ULM-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season. Shane Ardoin also had a pair of hits for the Warhawks - his third straight game with two hits.

Binghamton (6-13) took an early 1-0 lead in its half of the first inning when leadoff hitter Jim Calderone scored on a single back up the middle by Corey Taylor.

Jarrett Hammond tied the game up for the Warhawks with his third sacrifice fly of the season to score Jordy Poche, who led off the inning with single to right field.

The Bearcats threatened with base runners in the top half of the eighth. With one run already across, they had the bases loaded with just one out. Browning came out of the bullpen to relieve Josh Gill and got Mike Thompson to ground into an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play. Clowers made a diving stop back up the middle and flipped the ball to Boomer Blanchard from his stomach to start the double play.

Lynch (1-2) suffered the loss for Binghamton after he was charged with five runs - four earned - on seven hits. He walked three and struck out two in 5 1/3 innings of work.

Game two of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:15 Saturday afternoon.
