MONROE, La. - A suicide
squeeze in the top of the 13th inning proved to be the difference in
a wild game one of a doubleheader between ULM and ULL at Warhawk Field Friday
afternoon. The Cajuns survived a pair of last at-bat rallies by the Warhawks to
take the opener 6-5.
Kyle Bostick led off the 13th
with a weak single deep in the hole between first and second base. He was able
move up to second on a Warhawk fielding error on the play. Kyle Olasin moved
Bostick to third with a sac bunt and Matt Goulas had the game-winning sacrifice
on a bunt back to the pitcher.
Freshman Taylor Abdalla made
sure there was a 13th inning with a two-out single into right-center
field with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning - Abdalla was
2-for-36 on the season before his RBI single. Shane Ardoin scored on the play
after leading off the inning with a single to right field. He moved to second
on a sacrifice bunt by Caleb Clowers and moved to third on a grounder by Judd
Edwards. ULL intentionally walked Nick Wade to get to Abdalla.
After going hitless in his
first five at-bats, ULL catcher Chad Keefer led off the top of the 12th
inning with his 13th home run of the season to give the Cajuns a 5-4
lead.
ULM sent the game into extra
innings with two runs in the bottom of the ninth off ULL starter Zach Osborne
and closer Joey Satriano. Auttonberry started the rally with a single to center
field - his second hit of the game. Perry Smith hit a deep fly ball to right
field that Goulas dropped on the warning track. However, Smith got caught up
between first and second on the play and was tagged for the first out.
Pinch hitter Jordy Poche
hammered the second pitch he saw from Satriano into the gap in right-center
field to score Auttonberry and pull the Warhawks within one, 4-3. Ardoin
singled through the left side to put runners on the corners for Clowers, who
grounded out to second to tie the game. Edwards followed with a grounder to
short that drew a close out call at first base to end the inning.
ULM and ULL had combined for
just five runs and 12 hits through the first eight innings of the game as ULM
starter Drew Granier and Osborne kept the opposing hitters off balance all
game.
Kelvin York was 2-for-3 with a
run scored and a pair of stolen bases for ULM (17-36, 7-21 Sun Belt) before
having to leave the game in the seventh inning. Auttonberry and Smith also had
a pair of hits for the Warhawks. Bostick and Poirrier led ULL (35-18, 19-9)
with three hits each.
After the Warhawks (17-36,
7-21) struck first with a two-out single by Ardoin in the bottom of the second,
ULL scored two in the fourth and one in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead.
Jarrett Hammond started the
Warhawk half of the second with a single to right field. Auttonberry moved him
into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt and Hammond advanced to third on a
grounder to the pitcher. Ardoin battled at the plate after falling behind at
the plate 1-2. He lined the eighth pitch he saw in between third and short to
plate Hammond.
Poirrier picked up ULL's first
hit of the game with a single back up the middle to lead off the fourth. Following
a foul out and a walk, Fuselier doubled to right-center field to put ULL up
2-1. Poirrier singled home Bostick after he was able to move to third base on
one of three ULM fielding errors in the game.
York worked hard for the
Warhawks' second run of the game. He led off the sixth inning with an infield
single and then proceeded to steal second and third base. Auttonberry laced a
single down the line in left field to score York easily and pull ULM within
one, 3-2.
Granier held the Cajuns
scoreless over three straight innings before Bostick led off the ninth inning
with his first home run of the season for a much needed insurance run.
Dayton Marze worked 4.1
innings out of the ULL bullpen to pick up the win and improve to 5-3 on the
season. He allowed one run on three hits. Wil Browning (3-2) took the loss
after allowing two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Browning and
fellow pitcher Derek Ward each had an at-bat in the game for the Warhawks.
Game two of the doubleheader
is scheduled to begin at 7:15 p.m.
