MONROE, La. – ULM football's Justin Manton earned Warhawk Male of the Week and soccer's Mariah Mitchell was named Warhawk Female of the Week after exceptional performances over the weekend.
Manton, who was named Louisiana Sports Writers Association's Special Teams Player of the Week, recorded a career-long 77-yard punt in ULM's road contest at Baylor and his booming third-quarter punt is tied for the second longest punt in ULM history. He is tied with John Kelly who had a 77-yard punt at McNeese State on Oct. 13, 1962.
The Prairieville, La. native also recorded a 69-yard punt in the fourth-quarter at Baylor, which places him in a tied for eighth-place in program history. In all, Manton punted nine times for 479 yards (53.2 avg) with five punts of 50 or more yards, three touchbacks, one inside the 20.
The junior kicked off twice for 130 yards (65.0 avg) and two touchbacks. Manton was also named one of College Football Performance Awards' Honorable Mention Punters of the Week (Sept. 23).
Mitchell led the ULM soccer program with five points over the weekend, including a goal in each of two games. Against Central Arkansas, the Corona, Calif., native scored the go-ahead goal in the second half to put the Warhawks up 2-1. She finished off a corner kick that was sent in by Kylie Kukowski. Both of Mitchell's shots in the game were on goal.
In the 2-1 victory over Mississippi Valley State, Mitchell got the Warhawks on the board on another corner kick goal. She registered a game-high five shots in the contest to propel the offense including four on net. Her quick free kick in overtime led to the game-winning goal by Jenna Floyd.
Mitchell is one of three Warhawks to score at least three goals this season. The sophomore's offensive performance has led ULM to its second .500 record or better in non-conference play since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2006.
