Warhawks Roll Through MVSU in 18-2 Win

MONROE, La. – The Warhawk softball team is building momentum headed into a four-game, five-day stretch with a momentous 18-2 win over Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday night (Apr.17).

ULM's 18-runs breaks their previous season-high of 17 runs, which they racked up in a 17-11 win over Arkansas Pine Bluff earlier this season.

"Today was a good team win," said head softball coach Corey Lyon. "We were patient at the plate, put the ball in play and ran the bases efficiently."

Sophomore Sydney Wader earned the complete game win; who through five innings of work, allowed only four hits and no earned runs. Wader threw four strikeouts in her fifth win of the season.

"Sydney pitched a good game and it was nice to get another win in the books. We are planning to take this momentum on the road into Oxford tomorrow," Lyon said.

ULM started the game strong out the gate, with a four-run first inning against the Devilettes. The Warhawks' scores started off the bat of senior Rochelle Roberts. Roberts singled through the right side, giving junior Sydney McKay a chance to score.

Roberts finished the night 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, making her responsible for four of the 18 Warhawk runs.

Senior Cheyanne Lyon is right up there with Roberts on the stat sheet, batting 1-for-3 with three RBI. Lyon's first RBI came in the first inning, as she grounded out to first, sophomore Jayden Mount would score on the play for ULM's second run of the night.

Lyon would score McKay again, later in the third inning off a two-run single down the left-field line. This time, McKay was followed by Mount, who scored right behind her on the same hit.

Lyon's hit was a part of a nine-run third inning, that would be the deciding factor in tonight's win.

Giving the Warhawks the final runs of the night was freshman Rylee Lara. The Frisco, Texas native connected on a double down the right-field line to score both Victoria Pederson and Bailey Thibodeaux.

Head coach Corey Lyon made use of his non-starters tonight, scoring four runs off of pinch runners throughout the game. Tori Fugatt, Ava Heidorn, Maddison Morrison, and Savannah Flinn all scored when given the opportunity to take the base.
