Air Force Grounds ULM, 1-0

BATON ROUGE, La. – Offense was at a premium on Saturday night as ULM dropped a 1-0 decision to Air Force at Alex Box Stadium.

The Warhawks (0-2) managed just six hits and stranded nine runners, with men left on third base at the end of three innings.

"It was a tale of two different games," ULM coach Michael Federico said. "Last night (in a 12-7 loss to LSU), there was a lot of offense. But to me it wasn't even the hits. A couple of times all we had to do was put a ball in play."

The Warhawks threatened in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't avoid the shutout. Facing Air Force closer Jake Gilbert, Braedon Barrett led off the ninth inning with a sharp single to right. Andrew Beesley struck out swinging and Barrett reached second on a fielder's choice. With Masen Prososki at the plate, Gilbert threw a wild pitch and Barrett moved to third. Prososki walked with two outs, but Nathan Miranda hit a bullet to left field for the final out.

ULM didn't collect its first hit off Air Force starter Matt Hargreaves (1-0) until Cameron Horton's double with two outs in the fourth inning. Jake Kaufman added the second ULM hit with two outs in the fifth.

Hargreaves pitched six innings, allowing four hits, with one walk and four strikeouts. Gilbert pitched the final three innings and allowed two hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Air Force (1-1) wasn't raking either but the Falcons went up 1-0 in the fifth on a pair of two-out hits off ULM starting pitcher Trey Jeans (0-1).

Jeans allowed one run on three hits and walked one with seven strikeouts in five innings. Four ULM pitchers allowed just four hits and struck out 11 with four walks.

"Jeans left one ball up and the guy hits a double," Federico said. "I was disappointed from that situation. But he gave us a chance. My goal from the pitching side is we have to hang zeroes and for the most part we did."

ULM had trouble jump starting the bats on a balmy night. In the sixth inning, Trent Tingelstad slapped a one-out single and moved to third on Chad Bell's double, but the Warhawks left them stranded.

Beesley led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After pinch-hitter Brendan Jordan struck out, Beesley advanced to third on a passed ball with Nathan Miranda at the plate, but he was also left stranded on an outfield fly.

"To me it's not always about hits," Federico said. "Hits are hard to come by. But at some point, you have to sacrifice yourself a little bit and put the ball in play. It's a learning experience for those guys."

Military Appreciation Weekend: The Warhawks wrap up their weekend in Alex Box on Sunday, Feb. 17 with an 11 a.m. game against Army. The Black Knights (1-1) lost 6-5 to LSU Saturday on a walk-off home run.

Scattered hits: ULM pitcher Conner Deeds, making his Warhawks debut in relief, struck out the side in the seventh. … The team's postgame meal came from Jambalaya Shoppe, owned by former ULM second baseman Kyle Suire. … Miranda made a nifty pick in the fifth inning to throw out the runner at first. As third baseman Chad Bell passed in front of him, the shortstop gloved the ball moving to his right while on his knee and bounced up with the accurate throw. … ULM and Air Force broke out their camo caps for the contest. The Warhawks wore their new maroon jerseys with white pants.  … Air Force third baseman Nic Ready won the 2018 College Home Run Derby Champion with 55 home runs in Omaha, Nebraska, last July.
