2019 Sun Belt Indoor Track & Field Championships | Day 1 Results

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.
– Sophomore Brianna Sam earned her first Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship on Monday, Feb. 18, when she emerged with a school-record 66-foot, 3-inch (20.19 meters) toss in the women's weight throw. Four other Warhawks produced Top-10 performances on the opening day of competition.

Sam, who enjoyed four tosses of at least 59-9 3/4 (18.23m), landed herself on the podium in her fifth attempt of the afternoon. She knocked off defending weight throw champion Michaela Preachuk (South Alabama), who took second at 60-4 (18.39m). With her performance, Sam moved into the NCAA Top 35 for the season.

Sam Healy was the top men's finisher on the afternoon, placing third in the long jump with a leap of 24-3 1/2 (7.40m). While the title went to Arkansas State's Carter Shell (Arkansas State), Healy logged five attempts of at least 23-8 1/4 (7.22m), with his best coming on the third jump.

Joining his teammate with a solid performance in the men's long jump event was Colm Bourke, who came in sixth at 23-3 1/4 (7.09m).

In the men's distance medley relay the Warhawk team of Brandon McDonald, Nolan Smith, Eric Hawkins and Elias Keter crossed the line fifth in a time of 10:20.98. The ULM women's unit, which included Sharon Jerono, Brittney Roberson, Angela Jepchirchir and Edith Jebet, also garnered a Top-10 finish, placing ninth overall in a time of 12:45.97.

The duo of Grant Girtman and Cole Burgess, who placed seventh and ninth in the pole vault, respectively, rounded out Top-10 finishers for ULM. Girtman extended himself for personal-best 15-10, while Burgess cleared the mark of 15-4 1/4.

Through five events, the ULM men's team ranks seventh in the team standings with 15 points while the Warhawk women are in eighth place with 10 points.

"I felt like we put together a pretty good first day," ULM head coach J.D. Malone said. "Brianna established the school record in winning the weight throw. We got almost everyone to qualify that we expected to do so in their events. The biggest heartbreak came when Kourtni Russell hit a hurdle in the prelims and missed the final by 0.01 seconds in the event (60-meter hurdles)."

The second and final day of competition gets underway Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
