ULM Baseball Splits Doubleheader with SIUE in Home Debut

By Paul Letlow, ULMWarhawks.com Online Columnist

MONROE, La. – Trent Tingelstad and Andrew Beesley stayed in the thick of things in a busy home debut on Sunday, Feb. 24 as ULM baseball won its Warhawk Field opener 12-3 over SIU Edwardsville.

In the first game of a doubleheader, Tingelstad finished 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBIs and three runs scored. He tied the game with two outs to jump start a four-run third inning that put the Warhawks ahead for good.  He added an RBI single in the fourth inning and scored another run after a leadoff triple in the seventh.

"You try not to do too much when the situations get big," Tingelstad said. "Just stick to my swing, get a barrel on it and hope that everything goes right."

The designated hitter Beesley was 4-for-5 with five RBIs and came through with hits three times with the bases loaded. Beesley delivered a two-run single in the fourth, an RBI single in the seventh and a two-run single in the eighth.

"I just always seemed to come up with runners in scoring position," Beesley said. "I was fortunate enough to get pitches I could hit and they found gaps. My teammates put me in that position by working the counts and getting on base."

Game 2 was more of a struggle as ULM's pitching faltered.

The Warhawks (2-3) fell behind early in the second game, issued eight walks with four hit batters, gave up six runs in the ninth and lost 12-4 to the Cougars (1-4).

"That's embarrassing when you do that," ULM coach Michael Federico said. "Twelve free passes, that's almost a time and a half through the lineup that you're letting them just have a base runner."

Outfielder Ryan Humeniuk belted a solo home run, his first as a Warhawk, in the seventh inning of the nightcap. He was 2-for-4.

SIUE scored 12 runs on 12 hits against five ULM pitchers.

"It's very, very disappointing," Federico said. "Hopefully, we can get this out of our system."

Game One: Starting pitcher Jacob Barton was solid in his home debut while collecting his first ULM win. Barton allowed three hits, two earned runs, walked three and fanned six in 5 1/3 innings.

Barton surrendered a walk and RBI single to Dustin Woodcock in the first inning to fall behind 1-0.

ULM sent nine men to the plate in the third inning and rallied for four runs with two outs to go ahead 4-1.

The Warhawks tied the game 1-1 in the third on an RBI double by Tingelstad. Running hard with two outs, Ryan Humeniuk scored on ball that the SIUE left fielder lost in the high sky. Chad Bell punched an RBI single past a diving shortstop and ULM had its first lead at 2-1. Singles by Cameron Horton and Braedon Barrett loaded the bases for Beesley, who swatted a fourth-straight hit up the middle to drive in a pair to give ULM a three-run advantage.

Barton continued to cruise after giving up the early run. He retired nine consecutive batters before issuing a one-out walk in the fourth inning.

SIUE loaded the bases with a single and a walk against Barton, who worked out of the jam with a groundout to second.

Tingelstad's RBI single, another two-out hit in the fourth, pushed ULM ahead 5-1.

Barton left the game with one out and runners on second and third. An SIUE run scored on a foul pop to right field but reliever Miles Dunn recorded the final out to preserve a 5-2 lead.

ULM's third pitcher Dylan Marsh walked the bases full in the top of the seventh but emerged unscathed with a lazy fly to right to end the inning.

Tingelstad led off the seventh with a triple and scored on a bases-loaded single by Beesley for a 6-2 lead. Two more runs scored on an infield throwing error later in the inning to put ULM up 8-2.

Three consecutive walks in the eighth loaded the bases and pushed home a ninth run for ULM. With two outs, Beesley came up for the third time with the bases loaded and roped a two-run single for an 11-2 lead. A wild pitch brought home a run to make it 12-2.

"It was fun to get back home and play in front of the fans," Tingelstad said. "Hopefully, we'll get bigger turnouts with every game because we keep winning."

Game Two: ULM starting pitcher Trey Jeans made an early exit after 1 1/3 innings, issuing four walks and allowing three runs.

SIU scored the three runs in the second inning. Jack Rigoni welcomed reliever Conner Deeds with a two-run single down the right-field line for the 3-0 lead.

An RBI single to left field from Raul Elguezabel in the top of the fourth gave the Cougars a 4-0 lead over ULM.

ULM didn't get its first hit off SIUE starter Cameron Prayer until the bottom of the fourth when Chad Bell singled. The Warhawks loaded the bases against the left-hander with no outs. Braedon Barrett walked in an 11-pitch at-bat to bring in a run for a 4-1 score.

Beesley came up for the fourth time on the day with the bases loaded and came through with the sacrifice fly for the RBI to make it 4-2. Tingelstad scored the run.

Rigoni drove in two more runs with a single in the top of the seventh as SIUE extended the lead to 6-2.

Humeniuk's solo homer in the bottom of the seventh off SIUE reliever Chris Robinson closed the gap to 6-3.

But the Warhawks gave up six more runs in the top of the ninth to go down 12-3.
