Home Runs Doom Warhawks Against Volunteers

Pensacola, Fla. - A pair of two-out home runs, one in the third inning and another in the eighth, pushed Tennessee past ULM on Friday at the Cox Diamond Invitational at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

The Volunteers (10-0) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Justin Ammons was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and moved around to third on an error by pitcher Jacob Barton on a pickoff attempt. Jay Charleston singled to right to bring home Ammons for the 1-0 lead. Evan Russell hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to score Charleston for the 2-0 advantage.

The Warhawks (3-5) answered in the top of the second. Colin Gordon singled to right, and Braedon Barrett followed with a bunt single. Nathan Miranda then singled to left, bringing home Gordon with both Barrett and Miranda taking another base on a fielding error. Carson Klepzig converted the squeeze play, allowing Barrett to score to tie the game at 2.

The Vols answered back in the bottom of the third. With nobody on and two outs, Charleston reached on an infield single and Andre Lipcius followed with a two-run home run to left to put Tennessee up 4-2.

ULM had just two runners in scoring position the rest of the game, stranding Gordon at third in the fourth inning and Tingelstad at second in the seventh inning. The Vols put the game away in the eighth as Alerick Soularie hit a three-run home run to center to put Tennessee up 7-2.

Garrett Stallings (3-0) earned the win for Tennessee, throwing 7.2 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on eight hits with 10 strikeouts and one walk.  Garrett Crochet earned his second save for the Vols, pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Barton (1-1) suffered the loss for ULM, giving up four earned runs on four hits with a strikeout and three walks.

Miranda led ULM with three hits and an RBI. Chad Bell had two hits including a triple, while Colin Gordon also tallied a pair of hits. Charleston and Lipcius had two hits each for Tennessee, as ULM held the Vols to just six hits, but issued six walks, hit a batter and committed an error.

The Warhawks continue the Cox Diamond Invitational on Saturday as they face Western Kentucky. First pitch is at 11 a.m. at Blue Wahoos Stadium in Pensacola. Live stats are available at ULMWarhawks.com.
