Monroe, La. - Coastal Carolina collected four home runs to push past ULM 13-3 in the Sun Belt Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Warhawk Field.
Coastal Carolina claimed a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Scott McKeon dropped a bloop single into right field, scoring Kieton Rivers. ULM answered in the bottom of the frame when
Logan Wurm reached on a single that dropped into right center field due to miscommunication between CCU center fielder Rivers and right fielder Jake Wright. Wurm advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from
Braedon Barrett and scored when
Brendan Jordan reached on an error to tie the game at 1.
Coastal busted the game open in the fourth inning. Wright hit an RBI double, and McKeon followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Cory Wood launched a three-run home run to right to push the lead to 6-1. The Chants made it 8-1 on a two-run homer by Jared Johnson in the fifth inning.
ULM tallied a pair of runs back in the sixth inning on a pair of RBI singles, one from
Andrew Beesley to score
Chad Bell, and another from Wurm to plate Beesley, to pull ULM within 8-3.
However, Coastal put the game away in the seventh inning when Wright hit a grand slam. Zach Biermann capped the scoring an inning later with a solo home run.
Coastal starting pitcher Zach McCambley picked up the win, throwing six innings with three runs, two earned, on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. ULM starter
Jacob Barton suffered the loss, giving up five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
Bell led ULM offensively with a pair of hits, including a double, while Beesley and Wurm picked up an RBI each.
