MONROE, La. – Goals by junior
Courtney Marten and sophomore
Madi Garza gave ULM a halftime cushion, and a goal by sophomore
Louise Atkinson in the second half allowed the Warhawks to cruise to a 3-0 win over Nicholls in a non-conference match Sunday at Brown Stadium.
In the match, the Warhawks set a new team single-season record for goals. ULM now has 42 goals on the season, surpassing the 2004 squad, which scored 40 goals.
"I thought we dominated the ball throughout the game and got it into the areas needed in order to create chances," ULM head coach
Sean Fraser said. "We were unfortunate to hit the post and bar a few times today, but at the end of the day, we've played a Division I soccer game in the manner we wanted to and got the result we deserved."
ULM (10-3-1) controlled the match with 25 shots to four for Nicholls (0-14). The Warhawks had six shots on goal to one for the Colonels.
ULM struck first in the 17th minute. After freshman
Inge Konst fired a shot from on top of the box that was blocked. The deflection rolled over to senior
Theoni Zerva on the left side of the box. She sent a cross to the front of the net that Marten headed in to give the Warhawks a 1-0 lead. It was Marten's 13th goal of the season and extended her school record, while Zerva's ninth assist gave her the ULM record for assists in a single season.
The Warhawks added to the lead in the 39th minute when freshman
Mara Grutkamp gained control of the loose ball in the box and sent it to Garza out at the top of the box. Garza's shot slid past the keeper and into the bottom right corner of the net to double the lead at 2-0. It was Garza's first goal of the season and second consecutive season she has scored against Nicholls. It was Grutkamp's fourth assist of the season. The lead held to halftime.
ULM added to the advantage early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Zerva fired a shot from the top of the box that hit the cross bar. Atkinson took the rebound and sent it into the net to extend the lead to 3-0. It was Atkinson's second goal of the season.
ULM controlled the possession the rest of the way, allowing just one shot on goal to the Colonels.
Grutkamp had five shots to lead ULM, while Zerva and junior
Efi Brame had four each. Ester Hardardottir had two to lead Nicholls.
"Congratulations to the team on the goals record and congratulations to Thenia on the assists record," Fraser said. "The team is in a good place."
