ULM Softball Drops Doubleheader at App State by 1-0 Scores

BOONE, N.C. – The ULM softball team completed its three-game series at Appalachian State with a pair of 1-0 setbacks on Sunday, April 11, with the final game of the doubleheader being extended to eight innings. The two teams also concluded the first game of the series, suspended due to weather, with the Mountaineers earning an 8-2 win in six innings.

GAME 1: Appalachian State 8, ULM 2 (6 inn.)
The two units began the day by concluding the first game of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader.

Appalachian State established a 5-0 lead in the first inning, capitalizing on four extra-base hits. Keri White sent the second pitch of the game over the left-field wall for the early 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Sidney Russell doubled down the left field-line to plate Baylee Morton for the second run.

Gabby Buruato delivered a double to center field, stretching the lead to 4-0, before a double off the bat of Mary Pierce Barnes scored the final run of the first for the Mountaineers.

App State used a double from Emily Parrott to score the game's sixth run in the bottom of the third. ULM answered with two runs in the fourth, which came on a two-run home run to right-center field by Kennedy Johnson, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

However, the Mountaineers added one run each in the fourth and fifth innings to complete the six-run win.

App State's Kenzie Longanecker (11-3), who went five innings and allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and four strikeouts, picked up the series-opening win.

While Johnson was responsible for one of the hits, the other came from Korie Kreps, who was 1-for-1 in the game. ULM sent three pitchers to the circle, including Murphy Williams (2-5), who lasted one-third of an inning and allowed five runs off three hits. Adrianna Chavarria went the next two-thirds of an inning, surrendering two hits and recording a strikeout before giving way to Amber Coons, who permitted three runs on three hits over four innings.

GAME 2: Appalachian State 1, ULM 0
Appalachian State tallied the lone run of the game in the third, capitalizing on an error that allowed pinch runner Sidney Martin to come home from second base. Mountaineer pitcher Sydney Holland (5-4) kept the ULM bats at bay, allowing just three hits while recording three strikeouts.

ULM received its three hits from the trio of Jayden Mount (1-3), Madelyn Fletcher (1-2) and Kelsey Giddens (1-3). Gianni Hulett (4-3) suffered the loss despite holding Appalachian State to four hits while fanning five hitters.

GAME 3: Appalachian State 1, ULM 0 (8 inn.)
Appalachian State completed the three-game sweep with a double to right-center field by Baylee Morton that brought home Keri White in the bottom of the eighth. White had reached base on a single to short two batters earlier, moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Caylie Kifer.

ULM, which fell to 10-20 overall and 4-7 in Sun Belt Conference, managed just two hits in the game. The two hits came from Andie Edwards (1-3) and Jayden Mount (1-2), who doubled in the fourth.

The Warhawks sent two pitchers to the circle, including starter Adrianna Chavarria and Giannia Hulett (4-4). Hulett tossed seven and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts.

App State (20-10, 4-5 SBC) received extra-base hits from Baylee Morton (double) and Sidney Russell (double), finishing with six hits in the victory. Delani Buckner (3-2) earned the win, limiting ULM to two hits while registering three strikeouts.

The Warhawks will compete in three mid-week games, heading to Louisiana Tech on Tuesday, April 13 at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader at Jackson State on Wednesday, April 14 with games at 4 and 6 p.m.
